Other than the 170 itself being barely powerful enough to get to 100mph

The 156s were temporarily allowed to operate at 90mph on Scotrail during the 158 emergency withdrawal weren't they?

Not that I'm aware of, 75 mph, no air-con and no First Class. The 47/7s and Mk3s were
sheer utter decadence in comparison.

Gather 1S18 (booked for a 91) has hit sheep near Berwick and it’s caused some damage. Could be that another one is out of action for a while.
That's baaaad. Things are starting to look woolly for loco availability. Hope they don't have to get another 90 to cover, those are a bit like the mutton dressed as the lamb.

I'll get my coat.

You should, a lamb-entable effort.

Back to 91s, VTEC had two DB Class 90s (90018/029) in use yesterday as cover.

I thought they usually had two in service or is it only one?
It varies - it was just 90018 earlier in the week. They normally have access to two i.e. that’s what DB Cargo provide, though for obvious reasons (cost and timekeeping to name two) they prefer to use 91s.

I would prefer 91s myself!

Probably a few £100,000

that's just to fire up the computer.........
only way new equipment could be justified would be as a prototype for a rebuild for the whole class, but that's not going to happen.
New electronics would need a new safety case and all the required approval testing

Which is a shame, a re-build 91 would be better than those bi-mode things.
