Yes I find the GWR HST dreadful for thay very reason. It's like bring sat in a cell, particularly if not next to a window. I thought the 800 was much nicer in comparison, although another couple of inches off the seat backs would have made it even nicer.

Does seem perverse that train seats now have to be so massive when they crash far less frequently than cars, and decelerate far more slowly than a car in a crash too.

The high-density layout is indeed, not particularly pleasant. The 800 looks a bit clinical inside in my opinion.

Definitely a case of personal preference - highback seating is annoying on short journeys but on longer trips I actually find it quite comfortable and cosy.

Apologies for coming into this quite late,

Any idea what will happen to the Stansted Express Electrostars, are these going to be cascaded to those TOCs with Electrostar strong fleets like C2C/Southern/Southeastern or head up North?

They'll be spare, I don't think it's clear where they are going yet, though like the 350/2s they won't end up as scrap.

Apparently some industry pundits have said there is planned work for them after the cascade, but as the plans aren't formal yet, we don't know what these plans actually are.

Not sure what's going to happen to the 379s, current info simply mentions their impending replacement by Flirts.

I highly doubt that - at least not other than for a few months extra in the not unlikely event of a delay in rolling out the 745s - long-term they'll almost certainly end up with another TOC, we just don't know which one yet. A lot of it may depend on what changes with regard to the DfT's lacklustre management of electrification.

I didn't see them keeping them on, it goes against their total fleet renewal policy.

Maybe they will go to either c2c or Thameslink?

If they went to Thameslink they certainly won't be operating through the core. c2c would be illogical as well as they've got some new Aventras on order as well now.

They might be useful for WMT/LNR for short-term added capacity on the Trent Valley prior to the Aventras arriving, and to get rid of the chronically unreliable 319s.

I don't think either of those options are very likely, they're more likely to be sat in storage for a while prior to newly electrified routes opening I think.

If they had already been replaced by the 745s, then ScotRail could have them for the E-G, 100 mph, air-conditioned, decent First Class and fully gangwayed.

Thanks for the replies.

Very sad that these 379s may be spending considerable time in storage until more lines get electrified, but when that "open window" happens, if not for few years yet, then these may be considered too old which TOCs may prefer brand new trains which is the reason these 379s are getting swept away soon!

I think it is rather silly of GA rushing to replace these not-so-old 379s which these have lovely and clean interiors, probably the best of GA's current fleet. The 379s seem perfectly adequate for running to Stansted which isn't exactly long distance and Electrostars are also in use for Gatwick services.

It would be sensible to replace other GA trains with FLIRTs & Aventras which some are getting long in the tooth but the 379s? Come on!

As the 379s are Airport trains then perhaps these could be added to Gatwick Express' existing fleet?

Nah they won't be considered too old - they'll be competing for work alongside 350/2s which are 2-3 years older, 360/2s which are 6 years older, 360/1s which are 8 years older, 365s which are 16 years older and so on and so on - they'll be the first to be snapped up I suspect.

Corby services have been mooted on this forum post electrification.

I think they will be in demand.

GA are getting rid of them;
A) for a standardized fleet, albeit with two types.
B) The 379s have eye-wateringly high lease costs.

I don't know personally but it seems to be common knowledge on GA that they are way in excess of the rest of the current and future fleets.

Nobody knows where they'll end up yet. There's all sorts of places they could end up.

So Greater Anglia might keep them on?

Absolutely no chance I'm afraid. There's not the space or work for them! It would complicate matters as Ilford will be geared up to maintain one (well, two technically as the 5 and 10 cars are slightly different aside from being different lengths) type of train and the 379s would just complicate matters.

Not really too bothered as the Flirts look pretty decent really.

Shared bogies is commonly known as articulation. The advantage is fewer bogies so less cost and weight. The main disadvantage is that each bogie carries more weight so the axleload is greater, and together with other dynamic factors this could increase track wear.

It won't help in the quest for them to be allowed to use Sprinter Differentials

Indeed, although the extra axle load isn't as much as you might expect because (1) the body sections are usually a bit shorter therefore lighter than normal coaches, and (2) having fewer bogies the total train weight is also less than a conventional train of the same length.

I suspect any problem with differentials for the Flirts will be more about the axle loading of the "power pack", which carries the the diesel engine and associated kit and also has a body module hung off each end, although I don't think it has traction motors. It would be ironic if the main line electrics can use Sprinter differentials but the branch line bi-modes can't.
