To me perfection is when they have fully automated delay repay - no need to claim or for them to manually check anything, the system automatically refunds you. I guess this could only be done if installing barriers at the train, where you can tap in/out.

Delay Repay and refunds are completely different things.

I have a walk-up ticket being used as part of a spilt, the train I'm on is 30 minutes late, am I due Delay Repay?

Automatic Delay Repay: the future of rail refunds

Can I get a refund for train delays?

Yes, you can. You can use our Delay Repay scheme, where you fill out an online form and we send you a cheque (or rail vouchers) if you’ve been delayed for 30 minutes or more on one of our trains. o we found a way to make things even easier and better for you.

I’ve heard that you refund customers automatically now?

Say hello to our new Automatic Delay Repay scheme. If you bought an Advance ticket type on our website or app, then were delayed by 30 minutes or longer on your journey on the West Coast mainline, we’ll automatically refund you, directly to the card you used to book

Sorry, poor terminology on my part. I meant that it automatically credits you with the delay repay payment.

Obviously there are definitely some issues when not exclusively using smart cards (just like there is in proving delays when using Oyster now), so I suppose there would have to be an option to enable or disable this, basically choosing either 'I never use this smart card together with another ticket, calculate and pay out delay repay automatically' or 'I may use this smart card together with another ticket, don't do anything automatically (but keep delay data just in case)'.

And how would that work when thousands of people just buy their tickets with cash at a ticket office or from a machine?
Or are you going to impose some complicated system many would not want?

Like I said, it relies on using smartcards. The Delay Repay system is added to the card balance. Smart cards are already in use on a number of lines and areas, so some of the infrastructure is already there. As I say however, this would require the addition of ticket barriers and validators at each train door.

If I follow your "arguement" you are suggestng that EVERY passenger on EVERY train and at EVERY station will be required to purchase a smart card and that there would be NO ability to buy any other type of ticket; is that correct?
Now explain how this "system" will be paid for, considering the amount of "hardware" that wll be required?
And how you would arrange for it to work at say Sugar Loaf Halt or Llandecwyn?

I suggest you idea might work in an urban area, but all it does is make the system more complicated, removes the opportunity for spontaneous travel, potentially will cause delays loading trains, and does nothing to encourage rail travel.

It couldn't, because a great many delay repay-qualified journeys are so because the customer missed a connection. This wouldn't be possible to accurately capture with this technology.

They're just using the language of the consumer there, part of their (pretty good) SEO game.

Most laypeople view Delay Repay as a refund, however incorrect that assumption may be.

SEO game ?

If a major TOC is telling people "Delay Repay = Refund" then it is hardly a case of people assuming things (other than assuming a TOC would not lie to them !).

SEO is Search Engine Optimisation.

We all know on this forum that a refund is different to Delay Repay or charter compensation. The difference is fundamental.

Virgin Trains is getting people to look at their page by using the popular search keyword "refund" and then explains that they can apply for Delay Repay.

It doesn't matter if the customer cannot tell the difference between a refund under the NRCoT and Delay Repay like we can; they still get the money back. It's a moot point.

The vast majority of 2.6 miles between Paddington and Kings Cross is not within a London terminal but on the Underground. Read more carefully next time.

Thee is no need to speak to anyone like that, maybe Yorkie was wrong, maybe you misunderstood each other or maybe he was correct, it dosn't matter, just imagine what you would post if a member of rail staff spoke to you in that way

I feel sure you would not speak to Yorkie like that face to face but it is just as rude to do it in writing
