Hi everyone,

It's my partner's birthday next week and I'm planning to take her out somewhere for the day, but I'm on a budget and I'm not really sure where to go. We've already been to Blackpool and Southport quite a few times now, so I'd prefer to take her somewhere different for a change.

Any ideas would be much appreciated, although I'd prefer to stay in the North so we can have a decent amount of time wherever we go and still be able to get home in one day.

Thanks in advance.

What about Chester?
Or perhaps Shrewsbury?

Buxton is easy enough to do for a day trip. Really nice of course. Nice train journey. Have a bite to eat and a walk when you get there.

Maybe a bit far, but my uncle lives in Llandudno and that’s always nice, and easy to reach if you change at Chester.

Arnside is my suggestion. Lovely place for a visit. Plus you can get there behind a Class 37.

A trip around the Cumbrian Coast to Carlisle and back via the S&C would be nice, budget permitting.

Or Llandudno - my home town!

Or a Ffestiniog Round Robin

if you could stretch to around the £50 mark you could do a day trip by plane from Liverpool to Amsterdam, Belfast or Barcelona. Not quite budget but would be a bit special.

Depends on the weather, and if she prefers scenic, historic or shopping places. Buxton & Hope Valley can be a bit bleak and chilly at this time of year.

Chester is fine for old buildings, shopping, and the area round the River Dee is quite scenic.

For somewhere different, West Kirby is small, but has pleasant walks along the riverside, and some places to eat. Only limited shopping options, but you pass through Birkenhead & Liverpool to get there.

For future trips, if/when your budget improves, York & Shrewsbury are worth visiting, and possibly Windermere or Grange over Sands. If she is a shopping addict, you have Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds and numerous other locations.

Hi everyone, apologies for the late response.

I've had a think about it, and I've narrowed it down to Ulverston or Llandudno. Thanks to all for your suggestions, I'll certainly bear them in mind for future day trips.

Thanks mate.

I've had a look at both options and there's strike action on my partner's birthday, so I've decided on Llandudno. I haven't been there for a while, so it should be a good day out!

My mates were there yesterday for the snooker. Had a lovely day.
