The cycle area arrangements weren't installed by First, that's simply how they arrived at FGW from their previous TOC (and, I would assume, is how they were built). FGW just retrimmed the seats.

I'm slightly baffled as to why anybody would expect to be taking a bike on a bus, First or otherwise?

Me too, aside from niche holiday areas buses have enough on with pushchairs going into wheelchair spaces, let alone cyclists jumping on in numbers too! Some of the First Wright Streetdeck D/Ds have given up a considerable amount of space to wheelchairs & buggies, almost forgetting that people unable to climb the stairs might like to sit down on non-folding seats. But anyway, that's a completely other topic.

I only briefly glanced into 150108's wheelchair / cycle area but there seemed to be plenty of room for bikes, with the FGW sticker informing that there was space for 2 still in place next to the door.

that service got scrapped and the buses converted to trainers, the open-top deckers now have cycle racks fitted on the inside i think they can only hold 2.

Makes sense with open toppers, where nobody wants to sit downstairs anyway. Bit of a disaster anywhere else though!

Getting a lot of the unbranded GW 150s on Huddersfield-Manchester services at the moment.

Cycle space is very typical of First (they seem to despise cyclists, First Bus too) - it can take four bikes, but the space is taken by a tip-up bench that seats three, with nothing to suggest that it tips up. Try getting someone to move off that...

They're nicer inside at the moment than Northern and their can of fridge paint will ever manage, mind.

I hope the /2s do get split up as the ex-Centro units "cycle storage" doesn't even fit a bike.
Bikes are a pain on a busy train. When these were with GWR, nothing was more annoying than having to pay to stand for an entire journey, so bikes could block seats. What these 150/1s need, like the GWR 150/2s is two tip up seats in each doorway.

Be careful what you wish for. At least the tip up seats can be used. Some TOCs removed them to reduce conflict. The refurbished 365s is a good example. No tip ups so bikes / wheelchairs don’t need to get into conflict with passengers refusing to move. Bikes are banned in the peaks on these trains. I assume similar exists in Northern / GWR in the peaks?

I'm not sure Northern do have an actual policy, in general it seems to be at the discretion of the guards. Plenty of times cyclists have rocked up for the busiest peak services and had to shoehorn on with the rest of the passengers.

No cycle ban up here (though I believe TPE want mandatory cycle reservations put in) and First TOCs insist on tip up seats in the cycle storage - cyclists have priority but it's hard to get. They also insist bikes be put there and absolutely nowhere else.

I wouldn't be averse to a peak time ban (guards discretion perhaps?) as long as it accounted for directional flows. I don't think cyclists particularly like travelling with their bikes in the peak either.

Northern must be keen to get them as it's running 55E already!

the 150/1 as built had 2 longitudinal seat seats behind the the 57veh cab. I couldn’t remember if refurbishments has halved this and put some normal seats in as per 150/2

Back when they were in the East Midlands people wouldn’t move. You put the bike on the doors. The guard would shift the people on the seats. Unwillingly if the train was full. Saying that BR banned bikes from busy sprinters even in the middle of the day. I remember having to look through a list of services trying to plan travel with my bike. Getting to Matlock in the summer was difficult for example. Peddle power from Derby often the solution.
No 150 had a bike space as built , the 150 / 1 has bench seats until the original seats were removed and Ashbourne fitted as per150/2
Angel may abandon the plan to fit the toilet into a 57 car as even the engineering design costs are frightening them

I meant to say no bike space as built , the lockable area was supposed to be for parcels etc

Very true, by they time they were introduced they didn't have many of them and the bikes sort of took over. I say sort of as I don't recall it was that common to travel with bikes back in when they were introduced.

That said I do recall the "sometimes it is a but of a squash" leaflets did have a very long list of restricted services.

And good riddance too! No idea how they got into this dire state, even a little tidy up would've been good.

Oh well, all gone so very soon. :)

I've lost track. Which 150/1's are still to join nortnern
Thanks
The ones at West Midlands Railway, and the /9 carriages are yet to go. 130/131 leaving tomorrow as noted above, so just four /1 vehicles at GWR after tomorrow. :)

125 due to go to Wabtec Doncaster next week. Not sure if returning to PM or not, so may depend on the length of time it has to spend there. 926 not until end of year. The 2 hybrid vehicles, (1 in 926), up in the air.

With all these new units, surely Northern can provide 4-cars on the busy Manchester and Leeds diesel peak-times?! Even if one is occasionally shortened due to a fault
