British Steel have won a contract to supply 20,000 tonnes per year of 120m length rail to Deutsche Bahn. They had to invest £1m upgrading Scunthorpe to produce 120m lengths of Rail as the British Standard is 108m. British Steel hope this will open them up to further EU exports.

Sounds like a contract to make the German incumbents try harder.

20,000 tonnes isn’t very much, around 300km. I don’t know how much rail DB gets through each year, but I’d be surprised if this represented more than 5% of the demand.

Incidentally British Steel has supplied rail for SNCF in the past.

Seems to be succeeding the end of an ArcelorMittal Spanish production contract which supplied 147,000 tonnes (2,500km) per year to DB of which 1,200 tonnes was 120m length.

Hope they are transported by rail to Germany.
Bad news for the local industry - Thyssen Krupp.
According to the British Steel press release at
https://britishsteel.co.uk/news-events/rail-lands-major-contract-with-deutsche-bahn/
British Steel supplies rail across the globe from its rolling mills in Scunthorpe and Hayange. It’s also established a successful rail logistics hub in Lecco, northern Italy.
The initial contract is for 21 months and will see the new 120 metre length rails delivered to Germany through the Channel Tunnel. The requirement for shorter lengths such as 60 metres will be satisfied using the flexibility of both mills.
The first 120 metre shipment is due in March ...
