Hi,

I've heard that trains will soon be running GOO-Guard only operation. Is this true? I want to be a driver but want a secure career.

It's something I would expect to see in the medium to long term (it's an easier problem to solve than automating a road vehicle by a very long way, and the latter is very much getting there) but there are no concrete plans of any kind, so it'll be a long time coming.

I would apply to become a driver and not worry about it. In 20 years' time things might change, but that's a way off. There's no such thing as a job for life any more in any industry, but train driver is as close as you are likely to get.

Depends how old you are. Will it happen in next 40 years, yes possibly, next 10-15 I'd reckon not realistically going to happen everywhere.

I don't think the first mainline trains have run ATO yet in passenger service, though thameslink core will be first.

And with current terminology they have to rename it OBSOO
