Ken Dodd dies at 90

Sir Ken Dodd, creator of the Diddy Men and one of the most popular comedians of his time, has died aged 90.

The Liverpool legend had recently been released from hospital after six weeks of treatment for a chest infection.

On Friday, he had married Anne Jones, his partner of 40 years, at their house, the same one he grew up in, in the Liverpool suburb of Knotty Ash.

Lady Dodd described him as "a most life-enhancing, brilliant, creative comedian".

Speaking outside their home, she said Sir Ken "just wanted to make people happy"

Sir Ken was famous for his very long stand-up shows - with which he was touring until last year - along with his Diddy Men and the tickling stick.

"To my mind, he was one of the last music hall greats," his publicist Robert Holmes said...

Gone to that great Tax Haven in the sky.

Despite all the "Diddi Pay Diddi F... " jokes he proved to be an outstanding contributor to British Comedy for many decades. The length of his performances even in recent years belied his advanced age.

Have to agree with that, a Tweet this morning on BBC Breakfast.... 'he may have short changed HMRC, but he certainly didn't short change his audiences'

His funeral is to be held next Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and will end some time on Saturday.

Caught part of a tribute program the other night, one of those with celebrities in the audience that get picked out.

Mark Lawrenson, former Liverpool defender was in the audience. Doddy ‘jokes’ that he could have played for Liverpool but he couldn’t spit far enough.

And then in the news the next day, Jamie Carragher .........

I never found Ken Dodd very funny. Perhaps it is an age thing.

Nor me. I don't think I saw enough of him in order to form an opinion, to be honest. Having said that, I do always feel a bit sad when one of the "old school" passes on.

Like any comedian some will like him ( I personally did) (or should that be diddy) and some won’t, but without doubt he was unique, also he could entertain audiences for hours and never use a swear word and to quote David Williams “comedy flowed through him like water”

It probably is a generational thing with regard to liking Ken Dodd. Most members will not remember when he was regularly on Television as it was a long time ago.

To me as a child I associated him with The Diddymen which a lot of kids liked at the time.
