Glad we basically agree! I am fairly certain there was no running connection pre 1979 that allowed Central trains to trespass, but can't quickly find evidence.

As an aside, it would be interesting to see how the use of routes like the Battersea Reversible (avoiding the Brighton Lines through Battersea Park station itself) has affected how diverted trains have accessed different bits of Victoria. And not only have connections like these seen different companies or service groups using them, for different purposes, over the years - but there were also old freight routes, disused stations, goods yards and so on.

Platform 1 at Taunton. Known to old hands as the Barnstaple Bay. Still numbered, but I suspect no passenger service has gone from there for a generation.

I was on one of the Saturday only trains in Lincolnshire and it called at platform one at Barntby, the guard said he had never seen that before and made an annoucement for the attention of the Gricers. We were put there so as not to clash with a TPE towards Cleethorpes, one of us was slightly late running. I was with a party of 38 who got on at Kirton Lindsay, they would not open the doors until the train crew had all taken photos, some of which are on a Facebook Page to do with that line.

Passed through Rochdale for the first time in a long time earlier this week. Does the bay (P3?) at the Northern end see much use these days since the Oldham line was converted to Metrolink?

Tried looking on OTT and I'm guessing things have changed there as it mentions a Platform 4? Did find it interesting that on 12/11 trains to/from Man Vic terminate/start from P4 which would suggest SLW to Castleton? (Edited my mistake!)

I saw it used several (around 2006ish) years ago during engineering work East of Taunton. A 153 arrived in there from Exeter.

Not really, but it's often used during engineering work - or when there's a strike on!

SLW to Castleford would be very interesting.
Castleton, though, is a bit more boring :D

Some services will be terminated there during disruption or late running, but obviously it isn't a booked working as such.

I've never been on a train to Wick from Inverness which has departed from platform 7. I've arrived into it but not gone out from it.

Inverness Platform 7 is *weird*. I departed from it once and had a bit of a panic until I worked out where it was... I think there are only two (?) in the shed that link to the line going north, so presumably a third is occasionally required...

I've never seen anything use Platform 0 (the west-facing bay) at Haymarket.

The only time I have ever used Platform 0 at Haymarket was when the Forth Road Bridge was closed and ScotRail operated additional services.
It is currently being used for the HST Training Programme, when doing runs further North it will often recess in Platform 0.

Yes you're quite right, trains can only access the line north (without a reversal at Welsh's Bridge) from platforms 5, 6 and 7.

Platform 0 was created for the electrification of the Haymarket tunnels when services were running around the Sub. These days it only generally sees use during periods of disruption (e.g. the Forth Road Bridge closure mentioned above).

10:10 service from Cambridge to Norwich today is using platform 1 - never seen that before!

Very very occasional, but still exceptionally rare. I've seen it once or twice in the last 4 years; basically what you do if the points into 5/6 fail!

Don't think I've ever seen any Norwich/Ipswiches use 7 or 8.

Newcastle P12 never gets any services.

Joke:
Also, there is an invisible third platform, "Down Main", at Durham, that seems to only ever get non-stop northbound services.

P15 at Glasgow Central is long enough for a 390 but it is probably because it is at the other side of the junction even though you can actually go towards Eglinton Street Jct from there

I only see pendos at 1 and 2 now . Cant remember last night from 9 , 10 and 11 . Sleeper always departs that side but i recall going from 1 or2 back 2007.

Ive departed 15 on an East Kilbride service before , they usually only get across to 11

IIRC, you'll never see any train depart specifically from Dundee Platform 1S, which, although still retains it's designation, hasn't seen a dedicated service call since the Aberdeen southbound Sleeper ceased to loop platform 1 on approach to the station.

In all my years of frequent rail travel around Birmingham & Manchester, i've never seen:

1) Heaton Chapel & Levenshulme departures going from Plat 3 Stockport or plat zero being used for Virgin or Cross Country.

2) Pendolinos using Platforms 10,11 or 12 at Birmingham New Street

3) Cross Country or Virgin departing from Platforms 1 or 2, 11 or 12 at Manchester Piccadilly

4) Stafford P4 or 5 being used for fastest Euston services via Nuneaton

Any more?

Any more?

I'm a driver for Virgin and I've took pendos in 1 2 and 3 in the past in pre 11 car days. Can't go in 11 or 12 so you won't see that happen. Our 221s are an extreme rarity in Picc because the TM's don't sign them so it's million to one shot of getting one of them in 11. Highest platform I've ever used at New St is 9 and I've used 4 and 5 at Stafford a number 9f times over the years .Used 5 once this year so far.

I've never seen anything use platform 2 at Crewe, though I believe the EMT Derby carriage uses it sometimes, just never seen it.

I’ve used all the platforms at Crewe except 8. 2, 8, 10 & 12 are the rare ones. Don’t think 8 & 10 have any booked (under normal circumstances) workings at all.

I’ve headed to Crewe on the up line at Alsager, just the once. When the Crewe resignalling project of 1986 was just finished. Never seen a train (passenger or freight) do it since. I’ve caught a Pendalino at Alsager too (special) and a meridian (strengthening) and a HST (rail tour) so not bad variety for a little station!

The early morning XC service to Penzance used to use it, not sure if that's that's still the case.

Edit: Indeed, the Plymouth service does, based on RTT.

Not entirely sure but last tuesday on a Aberdeen to Glasgow 170 we pulled in further along platform 1.
