Is the saving on not having 2+5 sets on Inverness trains that significant? I think we all know damn well that fleet issues will see 2+4 out on services that need to be 2+5 whilst a 2+5 works a quieter Inverness service

I think you're right. Hopefully will become a non-issue once all the 2+4s are extended to 2+5s ;) although another part of me says they will be life expired by the time this becomes a problem- what then?

The more interesting question is what speed they would be able to do if they weren't so limited. ;)

A single fleet of whatever bi-mode 100mph IC unit offers the best value/most suitable at tender, of up to (I guess) 180-190 metres (ie similar length to the E-G electrics by then)

Pleasantly surprised when I passed them shortly after Alnmouth. Here's hoping the Mk3s wont be long in coming up with the next couple.

I am sure I read that the life expectancy of this refurb would give the HST another 10 years. If so won't be long before the need to start looking at the replacement options. Looking forward to getting them into service, they will be a massive improvement on the 170's. Be nice to come out of Queen street heading to Inverness and actually get a seat.

75mph tops - the same max speed as any light loco/convoy.

Presumably if, for whatever reason, there was an urgent need for speed, putting in a single coach would change it to a ‘5’ (or even ‘3’) headcode allowing it to go at up to 125mph?

Isn't there then still a restriction because of limited brake force? Or was that a myth? Can't remember.

It is a myth. There is no technical reason why an HST cannot run at 125mph with any number of trailers (including none) between the power cars. Before anyone else starts, I have had that confirmed by more than one HST technical authority.

No technical reason perhaps, but is it allowed by the rules?

Will be interesting how the 2 plus 4s cope if they are going to still very busy or ample seats .

But when it needs to stop within the required distance I would have thought the wear on the brake blocks would be much greater at 125mph for two single cars back to back than one with trailers inbetween?

The power cars are disc-braked though. They just have one block each for wheel conditioning (cleaning the gunk off).

I'm sure I read somewhere that either originally, possibly still now that the power cars do/did most of the braking at 90+ mph. The trailers brake/braked at 9%g whilst the power cars braked/brake at 12%g at over 90 and 6%g under 90 mph. I've no idea if this is correct mind you and I can't seem to find the page where I read that :|

Edit: the two-stage braking on the power cars was disabled when the brake pads were changed to non-asbestos containing.

There was a set stabled in the sidings at Dundee this morning, with power car 43033 in the new Scotrail livery at the Aberdeen end and 43135 in plain blue at the other.
I presume that this is the set being used for driver training etc.
I took some pictures on my phone, but it was such a cold, wet and windy day I don't know if they will be any good to post.

Any truth in the rumour that driver training is running behind schedule and may have an impact on service roll out?

A few tweets relating to the HSTs from Alex Hynes this morning on the interior. Not sure if the first is news or not, can't find anything through a few searches:

We are having a greater seat pitch, more tables and lining seats up with windows.

There's also 2 Craigentinny - Doncaster West Yard paths in tomorrow, service code indicates Rail Operations Group who have been doing the HST moves. Does anyone know if these are related to the ScotRail HSTs?

30+ years old and still looking sexy!

I'm sure it's already been said, but what will the layout be like?
Have a look at post #1 in this thread - there are some images there that show the layout. That's assuming, of course, that they haven't fiddled around with the plans since.

I don't believe anything fundamental has been changed there.

The second one is now running, anyone know what it is? Could it be some of the mk3s going for conversion?
