Post deletions: feature suggestion

Occasionally it is necessary for forum staff to delete posts, and a reason is given for this.

However, in terms of understanding why it was deleted, it's often hard to remember which one it was in order to learn from this and become a better contributor to the forum.

Is there any scope in the software to include the deleted post (or at least part of it) in the deletion notification?

If you routinely can't remember which post of yours was deleted then maybe the problem needing to be addressed has little to do with forum notifications.

In some cases a poster may have made half a dozen or more contributions to a thread, and you get a notification that a single one has been deleted. It’s sometimes difficult to tell which.

Agree. I visit the forum in fits and starts and when if don't visit for a while I then get a notification and have no idea what I posted two weeks ago, especially if it wasn't contentious but was a reply to a contentious deleted post.

It is quite common for posts to be deleted if they've quoted a post which the moderators have felt needed deletion. I agree this would be a nice feature.

Yes, this is the reason. One recent one prompted it, it was deleted due to "poor readability" - and I was intrigued to know what I'd written that was that bad. However as noted above I had made several posts to the thread so had no idea which one it was.

ISTR that it's been suggested several times in the past. Maybe this time.

Just to say mods are aware of this thread so there is no need to report it again.

Anyone in the interim needing more details on which post was deleted please feel free to send us a message. Sometimes we miss things or put them on the back-burner for one reason or another after reading a message. If you think a message was not responded to and would like to prod us you are also free to do that, within reason.

It's possibly because of the anonymous nature of internet identities; people feel they can be ruder/blunter/more honest because there isn't any real face to face contact.

Which is a shame. I always try to ask myself before posting "Would you say this to someone's face?"
