Hello,

I have bought and collected the following advance tickets from the Virgin Trains website:

Woking - Birmingham Stations Advance Single Adult with 16-25 Railcard on 03/03/2018 - £7.60
Booked on 08:23 EUS - BHM

Birmingham Stations - Woking Advance Single Adult with 16-25 Railcard on 04/03/2018 - £7.60
Booked on 17:30 BHM - EUS

On the basis that the weather isn't looking very good, I'm exploring my options for moving my trip to another date. However, the tick-boxes on the page above are greyed out and the two tickets are labelled as "(Not Changeable)". I'd call up the Virgin Trains contact centre but I'd like to know in advance (pun intended) what I am entitled to in this situation. Ideally I'd like to pay the £10 admin fee in order to change the date (although if it is £20 for two tickets then buying new tickets altogether may be a cheaper option).

This is my preparation for the situation where the weather is bad enough for me to decide not to travel but not bad enough to either (a) engage the articles of the NRCoC on cancellations and delays or (b) not bad enough to lead SWR or VT to advise passengers not to travel. In that case, I would expect a refund regardless. Please correct me if I am wrong on this.

Can I get the tickets amended? What effect does the weather have on this? Anyone with a crystal ball?

Thanks in advance as always - looking forward to your ever sage advice.

If the train is delayed or cancelled, or the company is advising people not to travel, you are entitled to a 100% refund (without admin fee). Some retailers make it easier than others to obtain this.

Why would you pay £10 (extra), rather than just buy a new ticket? Where the original ticket price is under a tenner it effectively becomes a non-changeable ticket as it will always be cheaper to buy a new one.

If bought through the CrossCountry website it would be changeable for no fee.

The admin fee is £10 per ticket. They are marked as not changeable as it does not make sense to pay £10 to change a ticket worth under £10, just buy a new one. (If you do, keep an eye out for snow-related disruption to the booked trains - you may be able to get a refund for that reason).

Thanks all for your help!

The 07:00 from Woking that forms part of my suggested itinerary is showing as cancelled as of 06:00ish (1B14 has become 5B14 on RTT), so I think that's my money back - or at least NRCoC Art 30 engaged in some way. No idea about my 08:23 from Euston, but I don't think that matters.

Back to bed now - will get onto Virgin Trains at another juncture as I'm sure their Customer Services have enough to deal with this morning! Thanks again all.
