In the event a pan looses proper contact and whips or pulls down a wire, the wires are now (or are becoming) independently mechanically registered, which means the chances of ALL the overhead lines coming down when one is damaged are much lower, which means the system is more reliable.
Interestingly, there's a lot of portals (and sort of portals) in this area already. Between
39:30 and
40:00 on this 2013 shot video you can see that quite a lot of portals in the Connington area. The ones at 39:45 look really similar to some of the ones on the North East Corridor in the US.
