Anything interesting to see in the Vienna area? Could be in terms of traction, routes etc.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Plenty of older trams, plus the interurban to Baden.
Overground sections of the U-bahn.
Hungarian locos at Wien-FJB
Long distance trains into Central Europe (Kyiv, Bucuresti, Beograd...) and Motorail at Hbf.
Westbahn open-access at Westbf and now through to Praterstern.
15in gauge line in the Prater.
No ideas about freight, sorry.
For interesting routes scenically you'd have to go some distance, but if you have enough time the Semmering and the Mariazell NG line.

Well the singing Taurus locomotives on RailJet services are certainly something ;)
Could I take the Railjet just from Hauptbahnhof to Meidling on a day ticket or to the airport on the S-bahn fare just to sample it, without buying a long distance ticket?

Taking the RailJet is absolutley permitted on a valid "VOR"-Ticket (VOR=Verkehrsverbund Ost-Region). This is in contrast to the german situtation.

Other things of intrest: E1 trams (mainly line 25, 26 (most days) and 30 (M-F, peak only), 4020 S-Bahn units (check the timetable for stuff without a wheelchair), the public transport museum (Wednesdays&Weekends, very nice, modern and interactive with a huge collection of vehicles). Another pretty nice thing is a day trip to Bratislava (there is a cheap-ish return ticket with a day ticket for Bratislava included). Tram 38 to Grinzing has a rather nice terimnus and the S45 gives a rather pleasant journey through the suburbs. 5047 units are also very classic and can be found on some workings on the Marchegg line.

For food: I can truly recommend "Leo's Würstelstand" (U6, 37, 38 Nußdorfer Straße) which does very decent sausages for a fair price.

Have you decided how to get to and from Vienna yet?
Unfortunately it will be by plane.

Thanks! Very useful and detailed.

Would that pass be valid on all Vienna transport (train, tram, underground) or just ÖBB trains, and is there a map of its validity zone?

A VOR-Ticket would be valid for all transport (i.e. train, tram, underground, trains and bus(s)es) within "Zone 100", which is basiclly the entire City of Wien (check either the official map ("Gesamtnetzplan") or this unofficial map with a better design and the same content).
As you might see, the airport is not covered and a seprate ticket is required.
A Monday-Sunday ticket for Vienna costs 17,10€ and a extension from the boundary to the airport (or vice versa) costs 1,70€ each way. More tickets for Vienna itself are listed https://www.vor.at/tickets/tickets-fuer-wien/ here (There seems to be a new offer including airport returns). All of this should be aviable at a TVM (which are located in rather high number in the airport and in the station) or at the ticket office (near the ramp down).

Brilliant, thank you.
