Just to go one over on TugzRule...

Could it be a 159/1...The units that SWT have cut 'n' shut together out of the entirety of Northerns old 158 fleet? As they've been given new TOPS numbers, they do class as the "newest" members of the Sprinter family...

Do they? I seem to remember when 158s first appeared that they were deliberately distinguished from "Sprinters" as "Express" units, and much was made of their being a new design. Sprinters as such were those derived from the two prototypes, and ended up as the 150-156 series.

What I was saying is that the 159/1 - As a sub class - Only started to exist after SWT started playing "hide the extra driving cab" and re-raking their 158's into cut 'n' shut 159's about two years ago.

Personally though - Whether they're 158s or 159s - I don't really care that much, I love both classes to bits...Although on that token I have to say that I'm pretty p***ed off with the results of SWT's "upgrade" program.
Before they "upgraded" their Sprinter fleet, SWT had an excellent DMU fleet with engines that had a very deep and pleasing roar to them...And with them still having the "dingy" lighting and original BR upholstery, they still retained that true gr1m and n3cr0 atmosphere that they had acquired from many years of faithful and dedicated service in the North. Indeed, the 158's and 159's were my inspiration for my other internet username; DieselDragon!

For many people, the upgrade might have been long overdue...But before that same upgrade, I used to look forward to every single night-time journey that I would take on board one of SWTs Sprinters with a great deal of anticipation. Even though I'd normally be travelling into London on such a journey, it still felt as if I was on a Northern service crossing the Pennines on the way to Newcastle, with the south safely out of the way a million miles behind me...

If the 158/159 are a separate "Express" family, then would the newest be the 155 rebuilt as 153s?

158s are Express Sprinters and 159s are South Western Turbos.

I don't think so, all of SWTs 3 car 159s are the genuine thing. They also never "re-raked" the 158s. The 3 car 158s acquired from TPE were renumbered as 159/1s, and the 2 car 158s were renumbered in the 1588xx series.
