Dan - it's also actually quicker to walk from Charing Cross mainline to Embankment than it is to the Charing Cross Underground platforms. Just exit by the side staircase near the platform 1 barrier line into Villiers Street.

Genuine question, as you were going to hit your oyster cap, why didn't you just buy a paper ticket on arrival at Victoria? (Purely out of interest).

If you get a chance to go again, I'd recommend getting one and then heading out to the further zones. Something like the SouthEastern or SWT Metro lines with loops make it very easy to come back on yourself. I often go round on SE, change at Hither Green, head down to Orpington and back via Bromley. Or at least Denmark Hill and maybe over to Clapham. Either way, its seamless on a paper ticket. Worth doing.

Oh and plenty of people go Victoria to Clapham, mostly for changing. I do when I'm going to and from Raynes Park and want some Electrostar in my life or when I need the area around Victoria.

Just to re-bump this thread, I stood on the footbridge across St John's on Monday and got quite a fair few number of units. Went to Clapham also.

Any other stations that do not have ticket barriers or where I can just purchase a paper single ticket?

Apart from when there's a revenue block when the clowns hold folk on the stairs.

Yes, mainly 700s but also southeastern 375s (and the odd 465 as well) during the peaks

I would imagine Elephant & Castle being open is a blessing for fare dodgers, especially on the Sutton loop where I think most of the stations don't have gates.

Is that all? Whenever I encounter a revenue block, there's loads lined up to have their details taken and not just off Sutton loop trains either. Folk coming off the South Eastern seem equally up for a spot of faredodging.

Ah, the not so clever revenue block. There will be far more folk joining trains then rather than alighting so even if you are minded not to pay, then you will still have the opportunity to buy a ticket or tap in. It's the morning peak blocks that seem to trap people by the bus load. And as well as the 20 RPIs, there's normally four or five Old Bill there too (and not of the BTP variety either). I've often wondered whether the rail operators pay for the use of standard plods at "events" like this or is it part of their duties? And also what training the standard plods have received in matters such as rail safety and ticket matters? None I suspect.

You can try Cheam. Good for spotting 377s and 455s! You won't get any trouble there, just tap in before you board a train. It's pretty quiet, even though it has 5tph each way (6tph from May).
