Scotrail used to have their Scotrail Express branding here.

Enthusiasts (in days gone by) used to turn those destination labels around and write their favourite loco number on it.

Ha, didn't see your post in time. Wondered if one clouted a platform at some point
Either that or someone realised that the clearances on the Mk3 would be significantly worse than C1 and invented C3 to define the routes it could run over - but not until sometime after the prototype started running.

Or perhaps Derby works was just used to painting C1 on everything and nobody told them not to.

Incidentally, is there such thing as C2? I’ve only ever seen C1 and C3.

at a guess, C1 was based on the (majority, longer version) the Mark 1, and the Mark 2 fitted that clearance. "C3" then for "clearance, mark 3"?

The original ones had roller blinds fitted with the destination labels printed on, although I'm not sure if they were ever used - on some of the sets that operated the Midland Main Line originally (mid 80s) if you opened the panel from the inside with a carriage key, the handle and roller mechanism were still there even though there was no blind

I remember seeing one of these blinds for sale on eBay a few years ago. It was an ECML one and was incredibly long, given all the different stopping patterns and destinations. Imagine having to wind through a multitude of destinations on an 8 coach train with four blinds fitted per carriage!? Paper labels were a much easier solution and one that Virgin East Coast still use...

Also for other information, in this one it's the Yorkshire Pullman, while sitting in Glasgow Queen Street.
