If Jeremy Corbyn was PM, he would be travelling in the same way as Theresa May does. There are many people in the world who would see the UK Prime Minister as a target, irrespective of the party they belong to
Quite - he'd have no say in the matter. Michael Foot used to travel to/from the Commons by 24 bus from his home in Hampstead before, during and after his spell as Labour leader, accompanied by absolutely nobody, but those were different days. Foot a totally different man from Corbyn too, despite what the Right will claim.

The Prime Minister getting all-around security in armoured limousines is not a thing of privilege, it is a thing of necessity. As a general leader and representative of the United Kingdom, the Prime Minister would certainly be a very popular target for assassins and attackers. Going around without security isn't really an option.
The Queen can manage it.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/ukn...s-with-commuters-on-train-back-to-London.html
The Queen has displayed the common touch by catching a commuter train back to London after her Christmas break in Norfolk.

Escorted by the station manager, she boarded the 10.54am Great Northern train service from King's Lynn station to Kings Cross on Monday, taking her first-class seat five minutes before departure.

The one hour 40-minute journey would have cost her £54.90.

"It's an honour to have her use the train service," Graeme Pratt, the station manager, told the Eastern Daily Press. "I asked her if she enjoyed her stay in Norfolk, to which she said she did."

For everyone interested in some more Jeremy Corbyn content here are the videos about train gate. He was trying to prove that trains had a serious overcrowding problem. Richard Branson later decided to launch his own smear campaign and reviewed selected footage from the other side of the train showing the backs of seats. These appeared to show that the seats were empty. Later more footage was revealed showing that the seats were taken.

Jeremy Corbyn was seen at London Euston standing quietly with other passengers yesterday by the doors on board a London Midland train to Milton Keynes Central. He had the option of taking a faster and more expensive Virgin Train and could have chosen first class to travel in style but he did not. He opted for the slow and cheap alternative instead, making good use of public money and spending it sparingly and wisely.

He doesn’t get taxied around to places in an armoured limousine convoy, he doesn’t get helicoptered over to campaign events unlike a certain PM we all know.

No, he takes the Goddamn train and stands up like everyone else when there’s no seats available.

I like this man. Be nice if he were the PM instead.

Corbyn will never be Prime Minister, especially after an incident at the UWE the other day where one of his many student voters (who I have to add had covered their faces) decided to rough up Jacob Rees-Mogg.

'Roughing up'? A bit of pushing and shoving, Rees-Mogg said he'd had worse from the Guardian. Why should politicians, of any party and none, expect to get an easy ride all the time? They should be heckled: water off a duck's back to the likes of R-M anyway.

Maybe he's become fed up with the "Plastic rubbish" that has poor seat to window alignment and a claustrophobic interior that's created by the Pendo's tiny windows? ;)

Yeah it's a spectacularly unflattering photo. If I was her, I would have fired whatever press-officer authorised the release of it, if it was a press release photo...

Also, as much as I like Jezza (I'm lukewarm) this feels a bit PR stunty....let's see what labour says over the next few days...

No no there is no fake news here being peddled here. Just a photo of some factual evidence. This thread was never created to discuss the Goverment or security, it is to celebrate the fact that an MP chose to mingle with and stand with other passengers on a train instead of taking private transport :D
Didn't someone just say the M1 was blocked. If so, how much "choice" was Corbyn demonstrating?

1. Yes, and ... ?
2. No, he's an MP.
3. It is totally believable. How else do you expect him to travel? Magic carpet? Broomstick? Horse-drawn carriage?
4. Each to their own ...
1. But it is cool!
2. Yes he is a famous person with great importance in politics.
3. I wouldn't expect anything else from MR Corbyn although I would expect other MPs to throw money away on first class flights, private jets and taxis. If magic carpets and broomsticks existed I think we would require politicians to use them so they can free and fast travel giving them no reason to not turn up to meetings or to be late. London is too over crowded nowadays for horses and carriages and they would be too slow anyway, good for tourists to catch a glimpse of history though lol.

I will agree to disagree with you buddy

MPs take public transport all the time.

At one point a colleague and I stopped taking a particular service as it was so loaded with MPs every single Friday night that it was a high risk target.

There are other European countries where the PM, even members of their royal family, if they have one, feel, and are, perfectly safe in public without bodyguards. We are just such a hatefilled nation.

Not wishing to go into too much detail, as ever, but it's quite easy for somebody to travel on a train and it to look "normal" (which effectively it may well be, without any motive on their part), yet the security detail is not just the odd bodyguard in the same vestibule, but also with the security capabilities already built-in throughout the fabric of the entire transportation system. National rail travel in this country has embedded security which is concealed in plain sight within its own infrastructure, but would be frowned at on a road.

Thoughts on thread..? Ok then..
Corbyn travels to Milton Keynes to visit an NHS hospital, in his capacity as Leader of the Opposition. So far so normal.
He goes by train. Still nothing noteworthy.
He fails to make a reservation, or make the sorts of advance planning arrangements that would allow a supposedly busy person to work effectively at their seat while travelling.. especially surprising for someone expected to be taken seriously in their ambition to run the country. Oh yeh, sounds familiar.
A party activist takes a pic and puts it out on the internet, on Twitter and Instagram (the pic appears to be posted from the accounts of Soweto Kinch, a member of Jazz for Labour, supporter of Momentum, and regular attendee at party events, and apparently on friendly terms with Corbyn)
Easily manipulated Labour Party supporters enthusiastically and sycophantically retweet and repost the pic around social media..

Oh blimey. o_O

I’m really, really not. I don’t care that much. Trust me.
Alrighty then, I am glad you and I have cleared that up. You seem to frequently disagree with and write negative comments in response to my content and as a first made a comment about an accusation over my age. I thought I would just ask and write you a little explanation. Matter sorted.

I'm sorry but this is incorrect if his journey was London Euston to Milton Keynes Central:

Virgin Trains CDR is £15.80
West Midlands Trains CDR is £16.40

(fares above assume off peak travel; West Midlands Trains is the train company who have taken over from London Midland )

I did think there was a high chance the photo was perhaps staged as a way of showing Corbyn as a 'man of the people'. Sounds like Corbyn likes to travel with activists, who invariably get 'found out' because they haven't quite mastered how to spin things discreetly.

I'm not saying Corbyn wouldn't genuinely seek to save money, but plenty of other politicians use public transport every day and don't get pictured in the media, blogs, or activist websites only viewed by fellow activists in their own little bubble.

A media spin-doctor who has never been on a train?

Does sound like standard class has to be made to sound really bad, because it's only for the working classes, and to make first class seem like something only for rich Tories and bankers.

First class on LM/WMT is actually very affordable if you want a higher chance of a seat.

As has been said, why shouldn't the leader of the opposition be able to go first class and do work on the train? It's not as if going first class gives you fold-flat seats and attendant service, but it does explain why some might want to make standard sound like economy; they really do think of trains as being like planes.

Funny you should mention the Pope, with all this talk of how a Prime Minister would need lots of security regardless of who they were...

(For those unable to view the link, it's an image of the Pontiff getting into his car: a common-or-garden Ford Focus!)

Also, this thread is the most entertaining I've seen on here for quite some time, seeing the way some members have (over, in my opinion) reacted to it...
I commend the OP for some pretty wicked white-hat trolling, and would offer to buy you a pint* but for the previous talk about age!

*=given the age discussion: skimmed, semi, or whole? ;)

The thread is more interesting than the 'story' of JC on a train.

The OP hanging his white hat on a non-story to show the intolerance (oh, and the pedantry) of many on this forum. Paragraph 1a in the "How to Troll Effectively" handbook. Top work fella. :p

I must have missed it, but at what point was there a display of intolerance from anybody on this thread, let alone on the whole forums? I haven't seen anybody display any such senses yet.

Yes as yorkie has correctly pointed out, Virgin are actually a little bit cheaper for this journey on a walk up fare. I stand corrected.

It is a surprising coincidence to me actually but there we are.

My MP, Grant Shapps, travels most days on a Great Northern train. A Tory on a class 313 with no first class! The shock! No way that'd make social media, unless twisted to say that he has no choice but to travel with the working classes because there is no first class...
