Thanks Alex, hopefully that annoying little 158 will pop up for you sooner rather than later.

Might see you in London at Easter time if you can get the time off :)

A good read, as usual. Congratulations on Forres Revisited. Looking forward to hearing about Kenilworth in due course...:)

Nice trip! That much snow is something I haven't experienced when in Scotland. I can only imagine how much better it must have looked being there! Photos never really do Scotland justice at the best of times! I agree with your reasons for revisiting Forres. I did the same with Bromsgrove and Rochester. Sadly I never managed the old Forres.

Congrats on re-clearing the shacks! I'm definitely looking forward to trams in Scotland (even though it means the demise of trams on the Western).

Got to love the dedication of trekking to the other end of the country for a relocated shack! Good effort.

Good to see Blindtraveller out and about as well, not seen him on here for a while? Hope everything's good with him.

Nice report and pictures- that's a hell of a distance to clear one shack!

Oh yeah, it is pretty much right at the opposite end of the country, although one I could have probably done on a day-trip (arriving on the sleeper in Inverness, pop to Forres before returning to Inverness then down to the Central Belt for either Edinburgh/Glasgow then home.

And I will probably be back that way next year when the new station gets built for Inverness airport (and I think there is one planned at the Aberdeen end as well), although by that time it should be hourly.

Top read as always good sir, and I won't comment on 170420...

Well done on re-clearing all the shacks, I will probably make more of an effort when there's HSTs up there. Only a matter of months to wait I'm thinking until that? Way too much droning action on your Scottish trips but the microgricing will have been hopefully worth it :)

You know I've always wanted to visit the Virginia Water Signal, well today I got my chance

Last minute decision to head to London when I found out that due to engineering works Reading services were being diverted via Weybridge and that connection from the mainline to the branch was required.

That's exactly my thinking. There's a LOT of Scotland I'm yet to cover, and what better way to do it than on a HST.

As an added bonus, the cascaded 158/170s as a result of the HSTs are coming to my local patch, so it's a double win!

Looking back over January 18

Seeing as it is nearly the end of January and I can’t see myself heading out on the rails again this month, it is a good time for me to look back over January with some random mutterings, with my red pen featuring as well with some microgricing (as I don’t really have much else to search for these days).

I was back on the rails on the 1st train from Grateley on the 1st January, mainly to grab the lesser used bay platform at Tonbridge, swinging back via a 700 from Sevenoaks towards Victoria, revisiting Mill Hill East before having a good session on the GWML picking up several 387s and a couple more 800s, the first train of the year becoming 159007 & 159008. The Tuesday was another day on the GWML, although my success from the Monday meant slim pickings for 387s, with an unsuccessful hunt for 345s from Liverpool Street, I ended the day with a fast 387 from Paddington to Reading for some Electrostar speed.

The Friday I didn’t know what to do, however with being kicked out of work earlier than expected, I decided to make use of a little plan for some microgricing in C2C land, picking up the centre platforms at Laindon & Leigh on Sea, plus the loop at Ockendon and bay platform 3 at Barking. 2 more 357/3s fell for renumbering (as I decided to put them back onto my list of requirements, more to fill a gap in my mileage log). The Saturday was a voyager heavy day (as it was booked when VTWC+ connections tickets weren’t available so XC was cheaper), I managed to grab platform 4C at Preston as well as the bay at Wigan Wallgate before heading to the Airport on a 319 for some motor noise, returning back to Basingstoke on the same 220 (but it does mean 220008 is now on something silly like 900-odd miles!).

The following Friday (12th Jan) was a lazy day to Birmingham due to a railtour on the Saturday, having found out that Mr Tech was also in Birmingham that day (and had also booked the Easy Hotel) so it was nice to have a little social as I picked up my last 2x 168/3s for renumbering on a good evening. The Saturday was my first railtour of the year, this being Pathfinder’s Severn Aggregator, scoring my first 66 of the year from Snow Hill to Gloucester, picking up required 60001 to visit the Westerleigh branch near Bristol, Machen Quarry [which was dud] & Sharpness Docks, as well as some loops along the way. A bit of late running caused me to bail from the train at Cheltenham Spa for a XC HST to Birmingham New Street for the final 390 back to London.

The Sunday was spent in London, randomly picking up platform 2 at Finchley Central, before having an unsuccessful hunt for my final 95 stock, learning in future to fester at Kennington to capture both branches due to interworking. Another unsuccessful DLR hunt was intercepted by a run to Dagenham Dock grabbing a couple more 357/3s in the process, as well as a couple more 345s out at Stratford (for it was a rare Sunday where TfL Rail was running!).

Another week of work, before another overnight trip on the 19th January, as I was booked onto the Highland Sleeper, so after flipping a coin in my head I decided to once more head to Paddington where I managed to pick up 3 more 387s, before heading to Euston to the Aberdeen seats being hauled by 92010 for the 400 miles to Edinburgh. Required 73966 took over for the leg to Aberdeen, before a pair of 158s took me to Inverness for a leap back to the rebuilt Forres station as it was required under my rules, before having a nice trip on the Highland Main Line in the snow to Perth, scoring platform 6 to change to a pair of 158s heading to Edinburgh. A trip to Alloa followed to tick off platform 9 at Stirling before returning a bit later to score platform 10, returning to Edinburgh saying farewell to Alex & Dan. The Sunday was a lazy day picking up my first EMU on the new wires between Edinburgh & Polmont, before a HST took me to Kings Cross, with a bus avoidance move in the shape of a pair of 800s to Reading before a pair of 159s took me home.

The following Friday (this being the 26th) I requested information on the workings of a couple units, getting good news, so it was once more to Waterloo, then onto Paddington then to Hayes & Harlington (it was originally going to be West Drayton but I decided to play safe as the inbound working was running late), before picking up 387162, leaving just 387160 & 387174 to go (and neither have yet entered service). An ultra-slow S7 move to Tower Hill (seriously it took 40 minutes) to be bowed out by a set-swap as 357326 didn’t pop up on a Southend service, so after a short fester I jumped onto another pair of 357s to Upminster to intercept 357328 working back from Pitsea. Needless to say 357326 features quite highly on my “Wants” list.

My 2nd railtour of the year was on the 27th January, this being UK Railtours “Thames Thumper” (it seems they have stopped using the “Hertfordshire Rail Tours” branding for the time being), featuring my first 59 for haulage (as well a dud 66). A slow day but I picked up the Colnbrook branch, Brentford branch & Appleford Sidings (meeting the legendary Keith), before a revisit to the Cowley branch before swinging back to Paddington via Bicester Village & South Greenford. As it was too early for me to head home, I headed over to Liverpool Street managing to pick up another 345 on the reduced service (but good to see more 345s than 315s out at long last). A bonus of an unexpected 707018 at Waterloo for a Clapham Junction leap before heading home, where my original plan was to have a lazy day, but these things change.

I noticed that Waterloo – Reading services were being sent along the mainline to Weybridge, before the branch towards Virginia Water, reversing and heading to Reading, I needed the connection and it was too hard to turn down, so after a later start than normal I headed to Reading on a 158+159 combo, before a slow HST to Paddington giving me roughly 3 and a bit hours to play with, so I headed to the DLR in search of unit 39. Another unsuccessful hunt has got me thinking it might be long term out of service (so something for me to look into). A trip to Stratford before some 315 based action on the short run to Liverpool Street from platform 10a, before heading to Waterloo with 458536 & 458505 getting the honour of taking me to Reading on a slow journey (after Weybridge that was, certainly felt odd doing some speed from Surbiton to Weybridge on a 458), I made the mistake of sitting in 536 so had a long walk at Reading to leap onto an Exeter service to call it a day. At least that little connection is done as an unexpected bonus (didn’t seem to get mentioned on the Unusual Track diary pages either).

January in Numbers

4489 miles covered
1 new station (Forres)
29 new* units (2x 168s, 3x 345, 5x 357s, 14x 387, 3x 707s, 2x 800)
4 new locos (1x 59, 1x 60, 1x 66, 1x 73)
No new light rail

Looking ahead to February
A trip to Leeds to do a South Pennies Day Ranger (hoping to get my first 399), The Blue Boys Ribble Rouser Tour, a random Cheshire Day Ranger, and a trip to Newcastle for a BLS tour on the Tyne & Wear Metro, going via Barrow for some hopeful loco haulage, staying overnight on the Sunday to try and pick up any of my remaining trio of T&W Metro stock during a morning peak session)

If you're now into microgricing, I suggest you join the "Gensheet" yahoo group, as the above move was identified a couple of days beforehand. Unusual Track is a very good resource, but is not always up to date or lists all moves.

Cheers, I shall take a lookie. That connection is slightly annoying due to the speed restriction heading into London on the mainline (at least on the diesels)

-------

My latest puzzle is with the 1845 Inverness - Edinburgh service which is booked to go via platform 3 at Perth [rather than the more common platform 4], does it normally do that or does it go via platform 4 with the northbound going via 7.

The 1845 does look like it goes via P3 according to OTT (although not confirmed on RTT). I would watch tracksy or live track maps to see if you can work it out. Here's a link to OTT that should help (looks dodgy, but its legit!) :

IIRC Perth is old school signalling so doesn't appear on live track maps (at least nothing for Perth on OTT).

I might give it a go later in the year as I think I need the platform 2 loop at Dunkeld & Birnam

Sounds like you have an interesting and intense February ahead! Hopefully you will strike it lucky with some decent loco haulage on my local line! Had a cracking run with 402 today

Good to meet you as well even though I had to decant from Posh to Plebs class although I am pretty certain our paths have crossed a couple of times before. And good to know that I am a legend!

Yeah, the Thames Trumper was good for me too with Colnbrook, Southall West loop, Appleford sidings, Milton Sidings, Morris Cowley and Greenford West to South all suitably deleted from my Code Red requirements. Two winning locos (59204 and 66122) as well all contributed to a good day out. Only thing that was dud was the coach (3121 again). And I also bagged five Great Western 387s on Ealing Broadway leaps and cleared four more of the things for 10 miles so I ended up going home one very happy bunny.

That was a busy month Kite. I guess more relaxing though now the shacks are done so you're not here there and everywhere festering!

Probably have crossed paths before Mr K

Good news on getting the 387s into your book, best to try and get them in before the 345s take over

Yes, I'll have to have a day or two over there sometime (me thinks late spring bank holiday week when I am free). I reckon that there are 28 out on a Saturday timetable so I should get a fair crack at the whip unless I get distracted by other things such as 800s

The feeling you get when you get a completely unexpected bonus score of a rarely used bay platform :D

Handy as the only booked use tends to be at the start & end of the day so it would have been probably an overnight stay in Doncaster.

(A GC 180 had terminated short at Doncaster into platform 6)

----

Edit, seems platform 2 at Rochdale is getting some use on Easter Saturday, although at a rough plan seems I will be throwing away a £4.90 advance for a TPE from Manchester to Sheffield as I don't think I will be able to make it back to Manchester Pic in time.

----

Edit 2...

...My god Lincoln has a rubbish service on Saturday evenings!

3rd February – The Sky Moves Sideways

A trip to Leeds was in order, as I took advantage of the VTEC seat sale from last year, however around the middle of the week I was feeling quite down and ready to throw away the money spent (£16) and have a lazy day, however in the end I changed my plan around and got talked around to making the most of the trip.

For the 2nd week in a row it was a walk to Grateley station for the 05:27 service, for the uneventful run into Waterloo on 159018, another 72.6 miles onto the total for that unit, and is it bad thinking that next week due to engineering works in the Salisbury area, that service is retimed so it departs Basingstoke at 05:45 [instead of ~06:00] so the passengers coming up from Southampton & Winchester have to remain on their 450 which turns into a stopping service after Basingstoke. Anyhow arrival into Waterloo was pretty much bang on time, giving me time to head to Sainsburys for a bacon sandwich before heading to the Underground, cursing as once more the TVM has given me a faulty travelcard [happened on the Friday and would not operate any gates whatsoever]. 3544/3248 took me to Oxford Circus with 11079/11080 zooming me to Kings Cross St Pancras, exiting LU with a good 20 minutes to spare.

The 07:35 to Leeds would be the service taking me to Doncaster (shock horror, I was breaking the terms of my advance by breaking my journey early!), so after the platform was confirmed, I made a note of the DVT (82210) before walking up to ID the 91 leading, my first 91 for a good 4 months, as I did a double take thinking “that doesn’t look like a 91” as I came closer the dark blue became clear as it would be 90034 hauling me to Doncaster (sadly a dud from the final Virgin WC Mk3 service), my allocated seat was in coach C, which looked busy, but with coach D being empty of reservation labels I took up a table seat in that empty coach (after-all why not?). An uneventful run on the ECML, a ticket check taking place pretty soon after departure, calling at Stevenage & Grantham only, and as is the case the train did lose time, but I had a nice bit of cushion at Doncaster before my first move of my South Yorkshire Connect+.

After a quick walk around, I headed towards the newish platform 0 to tick another bay off into my book, with 158844 working a Hull stopping service, with the bay platform safety into my book I bailed at Kirk Sandall for a tight connection with a Sheffield bound stopping service, formed of 142048, the run to Doncaster tipping it over 10 miles where I bailed from the busy Merseytravel unit, for a fast walk onto 220018 which was running a couple minutes late, but saved me some time for the run to Sheffield (plus allowed me to charge my phone as the plug sockets on that Mk4 wasn’t working and I couldn’t be bothered searching for another seat). Once at Sheffield, I headed up towards the tram platform with tram 109 taking me around the corner to Castle Square where my fester was for a matter of a few seconds as winner 399203 was rolling in on the opposite platform.

The new trams for Sheffield are quite nice inside, the seats are not as comfortable, but you get a good view from the front, anyhow I decided to jump out at Arena Olympic Legacy Park which got renamed from Arena Don Valley Stadium in the last few months so it counted as being semi-required (my rules are funny like that). Tram 110 took me to Meadowhall where I leapt onto a busy 185128 for a PNB on the short hop to Sheffield, returning to the tram platforms to jump onto 105 for the run to Castle Square, bumping into forum member “TC60054” for a little social, leaping onto 399204 to West Street for what felt like a day and age before 102 appeared to take us to Cathedral for a short wait before 399206 arrived on a purple route to take us to Spring Lane (the other 4 were sitting on the depot), impressive acceleration on these trams, especially on the hilly sections. 125 took us back to Castle Square, and 117 back to Sheffield as I said farewell to Tom before jumping back onto 399206 to Castle Square once more to have a look in a couple of the local shops.

Tram 109 was my last tram move of the day taking me back to the station, where with my mileage log open I IDed the next Leeds stopper via Rotherham was a low mileage 144004 (surprisingly only 3 of the class are sub 10 miles) for a short run to Meadowhall, where I made use of my connection to visit the ticket office and purchase my West Yorkshire Train rover (even issued on the correct ticketing stock!), before heading over to platform 4 for the next Huddersfield service, a nice bouncing 142068 [must have escaped from the North East] to Denby Dale, with enough time for me to have a walk down the stairs and to the road to take a picture of the lovely viaduct overlooking the small village. Back to the station for a short wait before 144014 rolled in for the run to Meadowhall, where I bumped into 185143 before boarding the late running 142024 to Rotherham Central, not as a mileage requirement but I decided it was worth a look at the state of play for the Tram-Train extension, the wiring looks done with the new low platforms at the Sheffield end of Central being built (as was the platform at the terminus at the retail park). A short fester before 144006 rolled in to take me to Doncaster, where I was in for some good news regarding the next Leeds stopper.

I met up briefly with another basher on Twitter (don’t think he is a member of the forum) who was out stopping at some of the lesser served stations, and I didn’t believe him at first but when I saw 180103 sitting on platform 6 (I think there was issues at Grantham earlier in the day and hence it got terminated short), a large smile appeared as 322482 rolled into the lesser used platform 7 (only a few booked services a day, mostly at the start & at the end, and getting that platform means I don’t have to worry about staying overnight in Doncaster on a Friday to try and bag one of those late night/early morning services). 90034 reappeared heading to Leeds, but I jumped onto my lowest mileage 322 (was only in my log for a tiny leap) for the run to Leeds (mmm 322 motor noise), arriving around 17:12 with the next departure to Wakefield being the 17:15 VTEC service, which I had assumed was the set with 90034 on the blocks on platform 6, however leaping on board and it felt odd that it was empty, as I checked the seat labels to see “17:45 Leeds – Kings Cross” so exited, the 17:15 was going to be a short turnaround of the set rolling in from London, it was a nice HST with 43311 leading 43302 departing 7 minutes late (my backup option was that 322).

At Wakefield Westgate I headed outside the station for a short while before returning to board the next Huddersfield service, formed of 150111 which departed pretty much empty, even after the reversal at Kirkgate there was less than 5 passengers in my coach for the run past Headley Mills to Mirfield (meeting up with Jack once more) for the run to Huddersfield. I say run but we got caught up in some delays caused by a passenger being taken ill on a Liverpool bound service eventually rolling into Huddersfield some 20-odd minutes late, however the train went into platform 5 as booked (the lesser used of the Leeds facing bay platforms). After a short chat I said farewell to Jack as I decided to jump onto 185145 for the run back to Leeds, emptied out of football fans (leaving behind their usual mess) which meant I got a table seat. At Leeds I had a silly idea of asking the train manager of the 19:45 service to London if I could board (as I was booked onto the 20:15), so after purchasing some food from Boots I headed over to platform 9, located the manager and he gave me permission to jump on a quiet service)

Quiet, as in number of reservations, it was busy in the first couple coaches with day trippers heading home to Wakefield & Doncaster, but after Doncaster I counted 4 passengers in coach D. 91121 was giving me my first 91 action, with required DVT 82224 up front, it was a nice fast run after Doncaster, slowing down for Newark crossing and only calling at Peterborough before having a right time arrival at London, giving me 28 minutes to get to Waterloo. A walk to the Victoria Line with 11021/11022 to Oxford Circus for a short connection onto 3242/3549 to Waterloo, coming out into the cold air and a short walk over to board a busy 159001 on the 22:20 (one of the main reasons why I decided to ask permission to travel early, as it got me home 80 minutes early). Arriving back at Grateley with a short walk home, quite happy at a productive day with 3 out of the 7 399s into my book, plus a few more bay platforms ticked off my “required bays” list.

I did notice there is a weekday evening service from Huddersfield towards Sheffield which uses the connection, departing from platform 1 (as it arrives from Selby as a peak-time extra), something I need to look into for the future for microgricing. Similarly I noticed the north facing bay at Rochdale (normally has no booked workings) is being used on Easter Saturday, so I need to decide on my options if I want to go for that quite rare bay. I think the hardest bays to do which is on my list will be platform 4 at Rock Ferry, platform 3 seems to have a couple early morning departures on a Saturday/Sunday and there is a couple nearby B&Bs which look decent.

Anyhow some pictures:

We must have almost crossed paths at a couple of points on Saturday! I noticed 150111 was on the other Hudds-Wakefield diagram, shame you didn't get to enjoy the relative luxury of refurbished 155345...

Nice bonus getting the bay platform at Doncaster in. Does platform 2 have any scheduled services? Only ever seen a light engine Class 91 in there, of all things!

Platform 2 has a couple booked EMT services to/from Lincoln (only recent)

Interestingly a play with RTT has highlighted a potential use of the bay at Whitland with the 0835 Pembroke Dock - Whitland going in there on summer Saturdays (then I assume shunts ECS to platform 1 to form a 10:05 Whitland - Swansea service). If that be the case then a plan is forming for the summer

I hadn't really thought too seriously of scratching bay platforms before...

...but your report has given me an idea for a day out! :)

This involves starting from Platform 1 at Manchester Piccadilly, then revisiting platforms 2 to 13 in strict order (and visiting no others out of order) before finishing at Platform 14!

Had a look at RTT, and its doable if the platforms shown on there are accurate on the day. Downside is it takes 11.5 hours (10/11/12 don't have so many services). And its cold out at the moment...

Good luck with that, certainly will be a challenge building in any potential platform swaps.

I think P12 is mainly used by the hourly Chester services
