Just seen it leave Picc as I was arriving, it was an HST.
I've certainly never seen one in before but then again I haven't lived in Manchester that long.We have a winner! An HST at Piccadilly must be a rarity these day
XC ran HSTs on Summer Saturday trains to Paignton/Newquay from Manchester Piccadilly until 2009/2010.People elsewhere suggesting 2004 was the last time (at least in normal service)
Why is it a HST?

Loss of signalling in the Bristol Parkway area resulted in significant alterations to Crosscountry services. As such, the HST set working 1V44 06:00 Leeds - Plymouth was terminated at Gloucester, took up the path of 07:02 Paignton - Manchester from there, and is subsequently working back to Birmingham on 1V57 (The 13:07 from Manchester), where it'll pick up it's previous booked working of 1S51 12:25 Plymouth - Glasgow. Why is it a HST?
I know little about X country drivers and depots but I am surprised the drivers that sign Manchester know HST's? Everything we see now is how route knowledge and traction tends to be limited to a "need to know" basis on the modern day railway.43301/321 were the PC

It could well be an out and back Birmingham turn. I am aware of a Birmingham based XC driver who, from previous conversations signs all of Manchester to Bournemouth, plus Birmingham to Derby and I believe all XC traction. They may sign Bristol way too but I can't recall off-hand
Birmingham drivers work the services to Manchester and also work on the core NE/SW XC Route over which the HSTs work,
Sorry that this will be irrelevant but today CrossCountry used one of their 7-coach HST was used on the 13:07 from Manchester Piccadilly to Birmingham New Street then it's 16:03 from Birmingham New Street to Scotland.
After tweeting / asking XC how on earth did a HST make it to Manchester, they basically replied it was due to a blockage in the South West. Plus they said it was better than cancelling it - I don't need to agree as a replacement 7-car HST instead of a Voyager is certainly what most passengers and commuters would want.
Also, a train broke down between Oxford and Banbury so that would probably make XC basically think "Right, let's use the HST to and from Manchester so that a service there can be run.
So, the HST's diagrams I think were either the...
1. 06:06 Edinburgh to Birmingham New Street (BNS) - not Plymouth.
2. Delayed 10:57 or 11:31 from BNS to Manchester Piccadilly.
3. 13:07 Manchester Piccadilly to BNS (mentioned earlier).
4. 16:03 BNS to Glasgow Central (also mentioned earlier).
Hope this all helps !
It was spun at Gloucester not Birmingham or CheltenhamActually it was 1V44 0600
Leeds-Plymouth terminated at Cheltenham. Returned to Birmingham departure as 1031 for 1159 arrival at Manchester. Later did 1307 Man-bhm and normal route to Glasgow as 1S51.
Oh well that was even better then. Thanks !

An East Midlands Trains has HST visited a couple of times, certainly during the Watford blockades and again in (I think) 2014 for a service from Liverpool.People elsewhere suggesting 2004 was the last time (at least in normal service)
