The downside was finding a seat on a busy train ... you could get some compartments now empty where the next one was still crush loaded.

Fenchurch Street 1987, non-corridor class 302 ready to depart, sprinted past full compartments and dived into empty compartment as guard gave two bells. Discovered reason for empty compartment was copious vomit on floor and a stench beyond description. Tell you, trip to Barking with head out of window was amongst longest 12 minutes of my life ...

They had a full side corridor IIRC and a coupe compartment, almost identical to the last HALs, and I preferred them - but we didn't get them on the SED.

Would have been interesting to try one, but they were before my time unfortunately.

The 4SUB's and older 4EPB's were built with a single non-corridor compartment trailer (all other carriages being saloon). There were other variants, such as carriages being divided into two saloons etc.

A lot of the non-corridor compartment carriages were opened or swapped out during the late 1980's, early 90's.

I thought all EPBs were built with some compartments. As you say, many of them were converted to saloon layout in the 1980s, though. I seem to recall that in the late 1980s a young woman was murdered in a non-corridor compartment, after which BR painted red stripes above the windows on compartment vehicles, which were then used only in peak hours wherever possible.

All the SR designed 4 EPB's originally had a compartment carriage. Not sure about the early configurations of the 2EPB's or BR (mk1) design 4 EPB's.

The Bulleid design HAPs had a full side corridor Driving Trailer Composite. They latterly ran as SAPs (with the first class declassified and the toilet locked out of use) and spent their last few years on Central Division suburban services. I think the last of them were withdrawn in the early 1980s. Would have loved to have travelled on them, but I was only a young child then, and don't ever remember even knowingly seeing one.

The BR design HAP DTCs had three first class compartments at the driving end, then two toilets (one for 1st and one for 2nd class passengers, with no access between the two classes) and a five-bay 2nd class saloon (same as on the Class 205 "Thumper" DEMUs). I do remember those - the last HAPs didn't go until the early to mid '90s.

The BR units (53xx) had two identical trailers which were half compartment, half saloon; the MBSOs had the saloon split into two. The 2EPBs (57××) were similar, with the DTS being semi-compartment; ISTR that applied to the Bulleid ones too - after all, he designed steam (corridor) stock that way!

Ah, thanks. I never saw any compartments in them by the time I used them.
