It was also interesting that the GSMR presumably had no problems in the tunnel reaching the outside world but the radios brought by emergency services did.

The SECAmb Airwave manual describes the steps needed to take to switch a vehicle's set to act as a repeater and to get the hand held units to connect to that. The example given for this was operation within a tunnel.

I could imagine that parking a vehicle by that cutting in a position where it could effectively relay being a challenge - unlike a road tunnel you can't just park at the entrance.

I think there are GSMR repeater ariels mounted on the tunnel mouths to ensure a signal through the tunnel

I am surprised that equipment like this presumably in running order is not hauled by rail through the Tunnel. Presume it's cost-related which says something about competitive pricing on rail freight?

For starters, there are only 3 vehicles coming back from Germany, so you have the issue of having to couple some sort of barrier wagon to the bar coupling on the inner end of a vehicle. You've then also got to consider that you'll have to run a full complement of barrier/braking wagons, as well as having to pay for locomotives and drivers to move these 3 cars, and it should be fairly obvious that it isn't going to make economical sense to send a 3 vehicles by rail across Europe, in much the same way that you wouldn't send a single container on it's own train across Europe. If you are sending something in bulk, or if you are able to put it in some sort of container and send it as part of a larger train then it makes sense.

If I recall correctly the Desiros came through the Tunnel on original delivery from Germany. But as mentioned it probably takes nearly as much time and effort to organise a one-off jouney as a regular weekly (or whatever) service.

Surely the point is that it actually takes *more* effort to organise a one-off than a regular service (which, once set up, needs no further effort to organise the next trip, at least for timetabling and diagramming purposes).

i assume you have never tried to arrange this kind of movement then ;) Cost isnt, really, the big blocker!

From this webpage, it seems that they did all bar one of the 450 deliveries through the tunnel, and the equivalent 444 page implies that they were all done through the tunnel. I can't find anything about the 360s or 185s though, although I expect it'd be similar. It also seems to be the case that since at least the class 380 deliveries, that they've usually had at least 7 cars in the consist

Looking at the photograph the vehicle is incomplete anyway - seems to be lacking its corridor connection on the end, so how many other parts need to be added when the unit is reformed? Far easier for a one-off move like this to give the job to Allelys.

There are plenty of photos of class 700 delivery movements with something like 10 container flats as barrier/brake force vehicles.

350 233 has re-entered full service (this was the northbound unit which struck the derailed train).

I believe that was repaired at Kilmarnock rather than in the Netherlands. It was fitted with WiFi last week and has been out in passenger service all week.

Yes all repaired with new looking bogies and all very shiny.
It was meant to be out before but it failed before its first test.
I'm guessing it will have to accumulate some fault free mileage before being returned to service?

Are there any more updates about them going back into service yet? I'm sure I can still see class 350 coaches in the distance passing Tyseley depot....

There were 2 350 centre cars at kings heath the other day. Don't know if 246 or another broken set.
