Mask it very well? Are all gay people camp? Haven't you met camp straight people? So they have to mask it?

Not accusing you of being homophobic at all, but it seems like a very odd statement to make!

He only said that the three he knows are slightly camper. Whilst it does seem like a bit of a sweeping statement, you can't really pass judgement on what he's saying without knowing all three of the people he's referring to.

I'm a gay rail enthusiast, only out to people online and those I trust. But planning to be more open soon. Got an awesome boyfriend and loving the railways, and so does he! Couldn't be better! :)

Don't worry, its not homophobic to say that :) I wouldn't say it was a majority of the site though.

And one in particular has suprised me too, which is strange because it is not like I think about these things to start with.

Hey, don't stress - that comment wasn't in the least homophobic. When I tell people I am gay, they usually come out with a similar remark and then worry they've said something terrible - they haven't!

People often mention homophobia, but I've never had any problems with it myself. Don't really know anybody who's like that.

There's a Louise Thompson around, she used to be a man but had a sex change, and then became a lesbian.

True (or so I am told) story!

Sorry to disappoint you but you've obviously been misinformed. Louise is a freindly, down to earth lass, and I don't think she'd be too impressed at people spreading inaccurate gossip about her.

She is most definately a lesbian, as this was confirmed on another forum by herself.

As for the sex change thing, I'm not too sure on that (although bear in mind that most rumours have a stratum of truth), but I doubt she'd care about my spreading those rumours about her - she hasn't liked me since she had, what can only be described as, "a mad one" at me when I began calling her Lawrence after she annoyed me during an online game of Open Transport Tycoon. This was when I had suspicions of her being "not what she seemed", and these actions, along with talk to a variety of other people confirmed those original suspicions.

Unless you've know her for many years, I don't see how you can know she wasn't a man at some point.

As I said you are misinformed. I never said she wasn't a lesbian. Obviously you have issues wanting to spread malicious lies and continue them when you are informed they are not right.

Apologies, you didn't make clear which part of my post I was "misinformed" on. Unless you profess to knowing her all her life, I think we'll have to agree to disagree.

Personally, I'm hoping that we can all be mature enough to keep this thread at least half civil...Otherwise the Mods'll be quite tempted to reach for the lock button again...

I know that RailUGay threads like this have often flailed miserably in the past (Normally due to arguments breaking out in-thread) but let's see if we can have at least one in RailUK history that remains as a sensible, cordial, and on-topic debate...Shall we? 8)

Anyway, in answer to previous sentiments about gays being camp (Or not): I'd rather have other people quantify this for neutrality, but I'd say that - Despite my orientation - I'm probably one of the furthest from being camp, to the point where I fail to register on even the most finely tuned gaydar!
Personally though, I consider that a good thing. Irrespective of whether I ride on this bus or t'other one, I don't see any reason why my orientation needs to be apparent to other people. <D

Apparently not!
I truly hate to [urinate] on thy fire Demps, but thy notion of lesbian enthusiasts being "convertable" is an extremely false one. Indeed, if any lesbian members of the forum (I don't know if we have any or not) had seen that post, they'd have probabally (And justifiably) been up in arms about that comment.

<Personal_Viewpoint> ------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sexual orientation - As far as I am aware - Is not something that is chosen by a person, it is actually declared within that person's DNA. Consequently, the idea of "converting" people from one orientation to the other is a false one, and numerous historical attempts to turn "gay" people "straight" - Including my own attempts to eliminate the "gay" side of my orientation before I came to accept it - Have failed.

Speaking from personal observation: I used to have a lesbian friend who was an extremely attractive lady, and almost every single straight bloke that knew her tried his level best to get into her knickers. Needless to say, they all failed in their attempts. The thing that p***ed me off the most about the whole thing though - Aside from the fact that very few men (Of which I was one) respected and accepted her orientation - Was that every bloke who tried it on with her would always say something along the lines of "How can such an attractive lady be allowed to be a lesbian?" after their attempts at taking her hand had failed! <(<(<(

The only "conversions" that can reasonably happen is where someone happens to be near on 50/50 bisexual, and in such cases there is no actual conversion taking place. Insted, the person in question surpresses the side of their orientation that they wish to surpress, and only act on the temptations and desires that come from the remaining half of their orientation.
I have a few bisexual friends who have decided to "convert" to being straight, but from conversations that I've had with them - Although they only go out with and enjoy the company of the opposite gender - They still find an attraction to members of the same gender as well...Even in those cases where a number of years have passed since they decided to "turn" straight!
</Personal_Viewpoint> ------------------------------------------------------------------------

So to summerise: Sexual orientation is in the Blood. It cannot normally be changed (Although bisexuals can choose to take one "side" only) and thus the idea of converting a genuinely homosexual person into a heterosexual person is - Categorically - A false one.

Farewell for now, and hope that ye all enjoyed the lesson! <D

The typical quote I see coming from members on this forum is "Oh them lot there so gay" and "Oh yes them type of people are gay" talk about stereotyping I have no problem personally but how about we stop playing the "I know who's gay game"

And as to why sexy women don't like trains well they don't spend two hours a day doing there hair just to have there status destroyed by nedding spoons and tractors.
I love trains and will never stop loving them but I accept that it isn't the most thrilling of pursuits so to find your typical "Max Power" sort of women is a complete no no.

I don't know why there is a belief among the majority of straight people that being camp equates to being gay. Some of the campest guys I know are straight. I suppose it just comes down to a 50 year old misconception that has been reinforced by "entertainers" such as Dick Emery.

It's almost as bad as the other misconception that gay people are, in some way, aggressively promiscuous. Again, that just really isn't so. I used to work with a lady who was openly gay. Outside of work she played hockey in a moderately successful team that had a summer tour. All through the day she and her other gay teammates had to put up with the jibes of her straight teammates, but who was going out every night, getting ****ed up and bringing back unsuitable sexual partners for a night of dubious physical activity...?

Quite frankly the last thing on my mind when I meet someone is their sexual orientation. It really has no bearing whatsoever on how well I get along with them and I certainly won't treat them any differently. I have quite a few colleagues who are openly gay and I actually get along with them better than some of my straight colleagues. However, that is purely down to their personalities as individuals rather than their sexual orientation.

Indeed. I've had very few sexual partners (just two long term ones) but that might be something to do with there often being someone better than me for them just around the corner!

I think that is an exaggerated story by someone who saw TV programme about people who were born as a gender different to their mind (if that makes sense).

Basically I was flicking through channels and came across Louise photting TPE Class 158s, so I watched it, thinking it was a train about railway enthusiasts or something, but it wasn't.

I can't remember what it was called or what channel it was on but this was at least 4 years ago.

She revealed that as a child her parents bought her pink clothes and dolls etc but she didn't like those things and was interested in boys stuff, like trains. She did mention an operation, which is where the rumours are coming from I guess, but althogh there was no mention of what the operation was, she wasn't a man before so the rumour can't really be true.

It takes a lot of guts to go on a programme like that.
