What's it like, what's to see, is it safe, and are the steaks really that good?

A very lively City with plenty of bars and steak establishments (I didn't try a steak as I was on a Cruise).

You will see British Type Post and Phone Boxes a long way from home.

Britain built most of their Railways so that may be of interest.

I remember visiting the Cemetery where Eva Peron is buried (lot's of stray cats if you like moggies amongst the graves).

Seemed as safe as any other major City.

I was there a couple of years ago and felt safe enough - I walked down to the cemetery Butts mentioned on a slack Sunday, also strolled around town. It's a great city in the European mould, with a slight down at heel air about the place.

The steaks were great and I was taken to some excellent restaurants by my colleagues: plenty of open grills and whole animals being roasted, if that's your thing. Wine also excellent. I'm glad I had the chance to visit and tick off another country/capital - didn't see any more than the central area and the airport road.

Just spent 8 days in Buenos Aires bashing the GM diesels on the Belgrano Norte line to Villa Rosa - they have 10 or 11 locos out working Mon to Sat (at 8 minute intervals during the peak times) and run a half hourly service on a Sunday.

Tickets are cheap.. a roundtrip from end to end costs 960 Pesos (with the discount from the pre paid subtle travel card) so that's 45p for a three hours travel!

As in most other parts of South America opportunist crime is never far away though - I met an Irish guy out there and he had a small backpack taken from the main bus station (sadly it contained all of his money,cards,two passports and an iphone) and a local woman sat two rows behind me on one of the trains had her hand bag swiped as we were leaving a station and the guy just got off and ran as the trains run with all of the doors open in the summer.

Go on TripAdvisor for more horror stories - some say that Chile & Peru are worse than Argentina though..guess you just have to be carefull and try and keep your wits about you.
