Fort William to Crewe then sleeper back

Hi

We're thinking of taking a normal train from Fort William to Crewe later in the summer, (off-peak flexible ticket), then travelling back on the sleeper, about 3 weeks later, (again date will need to be finalised as late as possible once weather forecast consulted). If we can't then get a sleeper ticket we'll want to travel back on an off-peak flexible daytime ticket.

What is the best way to do this journey? If we get an off-peak return for Fort William to Crewe (in case we then can't get a sleeper for the way back), will this give us a discount on the sleeper ticket in the event we do manage to get one at the last minute?

Your cheapest option is to purchase an Off Peak Return from Crewe to Fort William route Carlisle at £117.60 (non discounted). This is valid on both non-sleeper day trains and the Caledonian Sleeper service. Whilst travelling on the sleeper, the ticket is only valid for travel in the seated portion. You can upgrade to a berth for a fee of £34.00 each way.

This ticket gives you maximum flexibility by being valid on both the non-sleeper day trains and the Caledonian Sleeper. You can change your mind on which you travel on, at any point prior to departure of each leg. The only consideration you may wish to make is that the Caledonian Sleeper is very popular, berths in particular. If you wish to travel on this service it is imperative a reservation is held prior to departure and thus booking in advance is usually advised.

Your best bet is to speak to First Scotrail telesales and discuss with them which dates are especially busy with regard to berths/seats and then make your decisions based on that information. I have always found this call centre to be extremely efficient and when you have decided which date you are travelling, they will be able to reserve your places on the sleeper.
