Hello everyone,
I am a student. I would like to ask about the capacity of diesel tank in HST (class 43). Once, I found in the internet. I saw the capacity is about 4500 litres but I am confusing that this value is used for 1 car or 2 car of HST?

Thank you

Not sure but at a guess it is for one power car. The following diagram might help. The 0710 Leeds to Aberdeen then 1452 Aberdeen to King's Cross then 2330 King's Cross to Leeds diagram exceeds the fuel compacity so the HST goes to get fuel at Aberdeen otherwise it runs out of fuel in the middle of the night on the last train.

I have read but not sure that the capacity of the tank that mentioned is cover only 1 loco or 2 loco (whole train)?

Well each Class 43 locomotive has one fuel tank... I'm fairly sure it is explained in that link.

Indeed, thats why I dug out the link! The figures quoted are for a single power car.

There is a fuelling opportunity in that diagram, but it can complete the full diagram without a top-up if needed.

Approx 1200 miles range, 4500 litres in each power car if it helps.

Just for general interest, the largest mileage WTT diagram for VTEC (Mon - Fri) is currently 1169 miles:

ECS Clayhills - ABD
1E11 0752 ABD - KGX
1D21 1606 KGX - LDS
1A48 1845 LDS - KGX
1N35 2200 KGX - NCL via Askern
ECS NCL - Heaton

For a contemporary document about the HST, written in 1977, see this link. By the way, it confirms that each power car has a 4,500 litre fuel tank.

There are some diagrams where both power cars working is essential to get through the diagram, if one is u/s the other hasn't got enough fuel to complete it.

Sorry to be pedantic, but power cars have two fuel tanks, linked to act as one, they are different sizes, the larger is 2710 litres and the smaller 1966 litres.

Does that not fuel en route at all? Must be a real backside clencher for the driver if it's v.late or diverted...

I was debating whether to write one compound fuel tank in case of this

I remember from the early 1980's under BR being on the late Aberdeen - Leeds train working on one power car. It stopped alongside Heaton depot, fuel lines taken across the depot line to us to give us a top up to get the train back to Leeds.

I think this was a Newcastle - KX -Aberdeen - Leeds diagram.

And they are actually no 2 and no 3 fuel tanks! No 1 tank was removed fairly early on - not sure that all power cars had them from new.
