Rather that than simply referring to Chapmans or Ashbournes or Cholmondeley-Featherstonehaughs or whatever... though in the example given, "original seating" will suffice. ;)

I used to call the Ashbourne seating the original seating until people started complaining that it isn't actually the original seating.

So those would be the original 158 seats then, as still fitted to the WYPTE 10.

Are they not? I knew 150001 (and presumably 002) had a few different types fitted initially but had always thought the production units had always had those seats (which I'll probably forget are Ashbournes anyway).

What are the official names of the Pacer 'bench' seating and the ex-Merseyrail seating?

It is only the North the people serving paper pushing bureaucrats in the South feel people should be crammed in as needed. It is also fine for them to be riding around in life expired rolling stock. The design aim by BREL for the Class 150 units was 30 years, perhaps no one noticed at the DFT that these units are end of life.
My experience is that passengers would rather stand than cram into the middle seat of the three. ATW has 150s with 2+2, the nearest to me being on the Bidston to Wrexham service. But the DfT's targets seem more important than passenger comfort.

Just checking seating drawings 150/2 had Ashbourne, 150/1 had something similar to a 317/318 seating until conversion to Ashbourne in late 80s

In late 1980s 150/1 were converted to 3+2
150/1s were always 3+2, but as you say above, originally with the same seats as found in 317s and 318s. These were arranged in all bay seating layout, as per the ex-FNW 150/1s with Chapman seats.

Yeah I’ve found the drawing for the 3+2 layout , the seats are a tubular design , similar to ic70 but without the rubber arm rests , they were in red herring moquette and the 318 were in ‘blue/red stripe with purple side panels

All this seat wibble. You want to try the second man's seat in the cabs of most Northern units. You'd never complain again.

A friend of mine told me that he had a new girlfriend. I pointed out that she wasn't new - she had just changed her hair colour and had been going out with someone else for the past five years.

Pacer benches are just '80s bus seats. Best seats they have IMO.
I like them because they are well padded and allow for a great view over the Peak District. *perpares to get shot down in flames*

If there's one thing that's good about Pacers (and 153s) it's the good all round view due to the small window pillars. Though Electrostars and Turbostars come *reasonably* close.

Makes me wonder if the steel bodied 150, 155 etc are way past there economic life and it may be cheaper to procure new. I seem to remember reading somewhere one 150 needed a new roof.
K

I can't vouch for how well the 150s are standing up to wear & tear, but I don't mind saying that I do see them as most underrated DMUs.
As a first feather in their cap, they're the nearest thing Britain's railways have to a 'go-anywhere' train. I'm not aware of any passenger routes from which they're prohibited, but on the other hand I can think of routes where they're the only type normally used, or perhaps even permitted, I'm not sure about that.
And their wide doorways positioned 1/3 and 2/3 along the carriage length makes them much more suitable for local services than, say, 156s.
The interior layout is almost identical to that of a 319, and I haven't noticed anyone describe the 319s as 'life-expired'.

Yeah the Pacer benches are the best seats on the railway in terms of ambience inside the carriage. However, I recognise this comes at the expense of comfort on long journeys due to the lack of full height seat backs.

I'm never on a Pacer for more than 20 mins on the journeys I do, so for me they're perfect :).
