Haha, true, i few standard 4 and 5's would be useful!
I was thinking that Irish rail mk3's could of neen refurbished for Trans Pennine in stead of buying new Mk5's?

Hmm, if the offer of new stock is on the table, then I'd rather take that than see a make do and mend solution involving the potentially troublesome regauging of redundant stock.

Although it is a shame that a home couldn't be found for a number of rakes of air conditioned, power door fitted (though not necessarily disabled compliant) coaching stock at a time when the UK faced/faces a chronic lack of diesel rolling stock. Some push-pull sets would be quite welcome on Arriva Trains Wales' Manchester - Holyhead/Cardiff services, for instance. Though they weren't particularly young - perhaps they'd had their day.

all slam door SR EMUs
I thought that the South-east had problems because all paths were already taken up by trains as long as the platforms can currently accommodate?
As we can't make use of dc-only stock "up north" I would have liked to have the 309s to double-up the capacity between Manchester and Scotland, the corridor connections allowing Liverpool and Manchester to Glasgow and Edinburgh every hour with only a single path taken Preston to Carstairs. Also to run some semi-fasts down the WCML from the west midlands allow the current class 9s to to drop some calls and be speeded up a bit.

Seeing that the main shortage is of DMUs, I'm not sure there is much scrapped stock which could have found a use, especially as the majority of Mk3 carriages have found a new use.

Maybe if they'd known at the time how delayed the 73 stock would be, they would have used some 83 stock for the IoW?

Silly how the 151s were cut up really. Would be useful for a branch re-opening or something maybe.

Can't really think of any to be honest other than that GNER 89 which might have had a chance, but highly doubt it at the same time.

Looking forward to seeing this thread in a couple of years anyway when all the rolling stock chopping and changing takes place.

The only stock that comes to mind is the 442s, which are being rescued anyway. No locos as the low numbers of ex-BR diesels more than fill the demand gaps.

Class 89 is still in existence, and is slowly but steadily being refurbished by the AC Loco Group.

I was thinking of some of the the 1983 tube stock moving to the Island Line, especially as some of these were in service for a paltry ten years...

How about the trams that every town and city used to have? Clean electric transport replaced by diesel busses contributing to toxic urban air quality.

Clearly the Scottish push-pull sets should never have been got rid of, since Mark 3s are coming back.

Would now be a good time to mention the strategic steam reserve? :D;)
Or the lesser-known strategic diesel reserve containing 25s, 37s, 46s and a bunch of mkIIs along with the 124s, 151s and re-gauged NIR 80 classes (destruction of all the above was Fake News)...

This reserve is also the main reason for a lack of progress with reopening the disused Standedge bores! ;)

Ah, but weren't the 151s in the Llandudno Junction (6G) strategic reserve? Until they built a Pizza Hut on top of them!

:D

Technically not withdrawn, but some of the stored 90s at Crewe, plus hauled stock, would have been useful for the (TP) Manchester Airport - Scotland services.

In Bath, when they withdrew the trams, they literally took them up the hill and burned them. It's like they viewed filthy air as the way forward, as something to aspire to.

Going back in time a few decades, the Blue Pullman sets would have made good charter/luxury hire trains after their withdrawal in May 1973. They were all eventually cut up.
