I knew that touching at a platform yellow reader won't determine routing so it doesn't surprise me that an OSI won't either. The amount of data that can be transferred when you touch a reader is quite limited. I would hope that once everything goes to the back office it will be possible to be more sophisticated about interpreting the user's journeys.

But following the same route from Blackhorse Road to Bethnal Green or Mile End will charge you the not travelling via zone 1 fare (also with no pink validator in sight) so it is either laziness or forgetfulness on the part of whoever manages the system.

You are being charged for higher frequency of service and high station usage requiring high station staffing in Zone 1, that's why it is more expensive.

Who? Me? I'm not going anywhere near zone 1 and the service level on the Lea Valley route cannot be described as higher frequency at 2tph. And Lea Bridge station is not overly staffed so I am doing you a favour by avoiding your overcrowded stations and heavily congested zone 1 routes but I'm being penailsed for it.

With an Oyster or Contactless - what's the single fare (off peak I suppose) going from a Z2 station to Z2 compare with Z1 to Z1, and I note that Z2 to Z2 could be considerable further than 1 to 1?
Gonna see if I can find out...

EDIT (TFL Single Fare Finder page)
Warren St 1 to Marble Arch 1 = £2.40
Royal Oak to Hammersmith = £2.40 o/p £2.90 peak.
Warren Street (1) to Hammersmith (2) = £2.40 o/p £2.90 peak.

Hmm, nothing in it. At £2.40 the cheapest fare between stations, unless someone uses the tube/bus for multi-trip, it's a good idea to check the distances and maybe walk!!

Erm Royal Oak is zone 2, and there's a direct service to Hammersmith (via Ladbroke Grove). That's the quickest way. The Oyster is £1.50 at all times.

If Hammersmith D+P is specified the single fare finder does give the fare via zone 1, changing at Edgware Road, as it can't cope with the walk across the road. Specifying Hammersmith C+H will give the correct fare of £1.50 - however it is £1.70 at peak times, not as you've stated.

Interesting that Geoff Marshall has had a go at getting across London for £1.50

Good for him! So much easier on west to east, or vice versa, journeys of course. Almost impossible from south to north, unless your south is within spitting distance of West Croydon or Morden.
