If you had tried standing in the middle of the old footbridge in morning rush hour then you'd soon find out the purpose !
Or if you arrive in the terminus platforms and don't work in the city...
Indeed. Don't remember the exact figures, but I believe I read something like 40% of passengers exiting mainline at London Bridge head for the tube, then plenty of others go to busses and destinations that aren't the city. There are obviously a lot of interchangers who don't go through the barriers, there will be more when Thameslink and Cannon Street are back to stopping.

I used to use that sometimes if I had the misfortune to come into P5/6 on a Thameslink and would nip across to P1/2 to avoid the crush on the exit ramp of P5/6.
Also spent many "happy" hours lurking up there when trains were disrupted hedging my bets on which platform the first train would depart from...
Funnily enough the cancellation of the 1912 Thameslink to Brighton last night gave me the opportunity to experience the lower entertainment zone and I discovered many shops and a very loud busker....
Or if you arrive in the terminating platforms work in the City and are lazy so get a train to CST! I couldn't believe anyone was that lazy until you see it in action...

Are you serious? It's a 15 minute brisk walk and London Bridge can be a pretty inhospitable place if it's cold, windy, raining or any combination of those. Personally I'd probably walk it most times, but if I was slightly less mobile or I knew I'd not have long to wait for a train I could completely believe it.
There's a Cannon Street up every 2.7 minutes in the peak so you wouldn't be waiting long.
I don't regularly commute to Cannon Street but I've had occasional meetings in Walbrook, and thanks to Southern I'm usually late in to London Bridge and so have to take the train to CST to be on time!

Network Rail’s Thameslink Programme has reached another crucial milestone ahead of the New Year with the completion of all track work around London Bridge.
The infrastructure is now in place around the striking new station, ready to be brought into use on 2 January 2018 following ten days of major re-signalling, during which there will be major changes to services and line closures affecting London Bridge and other London stations.
Since work began in 2009, Network Rail has renewed and remodelled over 40km of railway that links London Bridge and Blackfriars to Lewisham and strengthened 35 bridges to support the tracks. The final piece of the puzzle was put into place on a foggy day in November, when Network Rail fitted the final set of points – which allow trains to move from one track to another – in Bermondsey. This was the last of 154 sets of points to be installed and it now connects the tracks through platform 4 at London Bridge, which will be used by Thameslink services from May 2018, to the flyover at Bermondsey.

It looks like the ‘bloke sitting in front of the lift’ has gone
Train crew are now discovering that pieces of plastic are less reliable than a bloke in front of a lift...
The architectural blueprints show only the part immediately in front of the platforms staying in the final configuration. When the large Tooley St entrance opens and the Western Arcade is its full width across and both ways all day, they're expecting more people to go down to the lower concourse from P10-15, which will reduce the volume of people wanting to use these gates. Can't speak to whether they've changed their minds since.

As we approach the major works in London Bridge (starting on the 23rd December), will SE services be diverted to Waterloo again?

I’m sure I recall someone saying that the boards were originally put in the wrong location and that caused the crowding issues but this gate layout was very temporary but was found to work really well. It wouldn’t surprise me to see it being made permanent.
The boards were put in the right location, for a station where the service is working well and where passengers are familiar with the station layout. Neither of which applied in the first week of January 2015, so the additional boards were put up.
Ah understood. Hopefully someone will write a book on that one!
Hoardings are coming down. Both inside the station for the new part of the concourse, and outside around the new Tooley Street entrance. Looks like there's still a lot to clear up under platforms 1-5 as of tonight. Escalators are all running though and much seems finished.

I probably speak for Bald Rick as well as many other staff when I say that the height of the London Bridge chaos is not something any of us want to be able to remember, let alone write a book about...
I received a bizarre email from Thameslink Programme today extolling that from May 2018 “Thameslink services returning to London Bridge for the first time in over three years”.
They must’ve missed the terminators in the lower level station.

Joe Public associates “Thameslink” with trains travelling through central London. Joe needs to know that from May he can now jump on such trains at London Bridge again. No need to dilute the messaging through needless pedantry.

Platforms 1 to 5 now pretty much finished with just minor snagging works to complete. The Thameslink platforms 4 and 5 don’t have the regular PIS screens that include platform number, details for next train and summary of subsequent departures. Instead they just have regular display screens in portrait mode. Anyone know why these two platforms have been singled out for special treatment?
