So just for a bit of fun, I'd like to see everyone post their own images of what some British traction might look like should it ever have a foreign livery be applied to it. In my three images below I have the HST in an SNCF-TGV livery, a Class 800 in the Deutsche Bahn ICE livery, and the Pendolino in the SBB-CFF-FFS livery used on ICN trains. I'm thinking the TGV one might need a bit of reworking like, but still I'd like to see what everyone else can come up with. Thanks...

Class 321 in Dutch NS livery. Ran for real, so no need to make things up.

Each was named "Freight Connection" in the language* of the country whose livery it carried, which was mildly amusing when they appeared on ECML services!**

DB livery is quite common on the UK network these days, of course!

*=The Belgian 90 was named in Flemish-Dutch, as the French language name was carried by the SNCF example.

**=I saw both the DB and SNCB locos at Leeds on MkIV sets during the 1990s. I have no personal knowledge of the French 90 appearing, though I expect it will have worked a passenger service at some point.

Have to say, the 800 looks very smart in DB's ICE livery.

I agree. To a lesser extent, so does the HST in SNCF Grey.

Speaking of SNCF, I bet a HST in the TGV orange livery wouldn't look too bad.

If you want to see what HST power cars look like in different liveries, then you might like the 125 Group's HST postcards, which feature power cars in various of their historic liveries, plus a "guest appearance" (which you can interpret as you want!).

Wasn't there a grey and yellow livery used in the 90s for some engineering trains, based on what I believe was a dutch livery?

Ohh... is that indirectly asking for another picture? Cause I'd be more than happy to do that one... ;)

(Though to be fair, I was hoping more people would be making their own images or at least uploading other images from the internet. So long as they're credited if they're from somewhere else of course).

Yes there was a lot of locos carried that livery several were allocated to inverness at the time mainly 37s and 26s also but class 31s 33s 47s and even 56s carried it too it was referred to as dutch livery this an example here

Is the guest livery actually revealed anywhere? On the photos it just shows as plain white with a question mark.

Why?! Some hope around international freight after the Channel Tunnel opened? (Why not Class 92s then?)

If I remember rightly, Freight Connection was a trade show/exhibition to advertise the through working of freight through Europe. The 92s didn't exist when it happened.

How did that come to be?

Advertising the through Rail/Sail to Amsterdam.

Thats correct no 92s were even built at the time.

It isn't. It's a mystery guest.

But if you're interested PM me and I might reveal more!

A man called Paul Burkitt-Gray has had a field day with this, on his Flickr page you'll find plenty of "alternative liveries". Most of them are of the "British TOC1 livery on TOC2's trains" but there are some international beauties.

Here's a few of them:

Abellio Pendolino by Paul Burkitt-Gray, on Flickr

DB Cymru class 175 by Paul Burkitt-Gray, on Flickr

DB Cross Country class 220 by Paul Burkitt-Gray, on Flickr

Tyne Wear DB Regio d by Paul Burkitt-Gray, on Flickr

Dutch Intercity Swallow ICM by Paul Burkitt-Gray, on Flickr

You can see more on Paul's Flickr profile.

They can't have been far away, there are two of them sat behind the 90s in that photo! And those 90s look freshly painted?
They were not freshly painted. When first painted for the exhibition the SNCF “Sybic” and DB “neurot” locos did not have yellow ends. Obviously they were applied before they entered traffic.

At the time of the Freight Connection event, the three 'foreign' 90s didn't even have yellow ends (they did not run on the main line in this state) to give maximum authenticity. The 90s were regular visitors to exhibitions and carried their liveries for several years, so it is possible that the image above was actually some time after the event.

(The French version became the basis for the later Railfreight Distribution livery variation.)

In that picture, the lack of HV clothing looks like an open day, so possibly bulled up for that.

Ah, fair enough! They did a very decent job of keeping them clean in that case!

You're correct -
The open day picture was at Crewe IEMD in October 1994; amongst which seven brand new 92s were on display and the three spruced up 90s.

The Freightconnection show the locos were repainted for was in 1992.

That's interesting, I hadn't realised that they were initially unveiled sans yellow ends. I've tracked down photos of them in this condition on an RMweb thread (http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/22424-class-90s-in-european-livs/), and the SNCB liveried 90128 in particular looks quite unusual from a British perspective. It must have been quite an eye opener compared to the all encompassing yellow ends of most BR liveries of the time, and 25 years before the opportunity to dispense with yellow ends in the UK arose!

For a few more real examples of British Traction in Foreign Liveries (and foreign service):

Class 92 in DB Red for service in Romania:

(Interestingly, photos show these locos retain all their decorative plates, including the BR double arrow and even their Crewe Eagle depot plates!)

Class 87 in Bulgarian livery:

Class 37 in Spanish GIF livery:

Class 58 in Vos Logistics (Netherlands) livery:

And, speaking of the Netherlands, there are the ex-Woodhead electrics that got exported:

and a brilliant illustration of why the BR Civil Engineers' livery (shown in another post above on a class 26) was known as 'Dutch'!

How about some foreign trains in UK liveries? I note there's a Dutch train in IC Swallow livery posted above - I reckon the ICE would look quite good in this livery too (but I don't have the skills necessary to edit images). Forgive me for my lack of knowledge of European stock, but I also think that those funny French locos with the reverse-rake windscreens would probably look quite good in large-logo rail blue...

I'll get my coat.
