The Master Cutler used to pass through Leicester without stopping until 2008.

I believe that was the last scheduled passenger service to do so at that particular station.

Many years ago a train was shown to pass through Holyhead without stopping.

It was a typing error.

In the early 1990s, there was a service from Blackpool North to Manchester Victoria that called at Poulton-le-Fylde and next stop was Chorley, I remember us going non-stop through Platform 2 at Preston, quite an interesting service, 31 hauled too.

You could say that pretty much everything on the Chat Moss going to Victoria doesn't stop at a particularly important city on the way. (Salford Central) . There might be one or two technical faults with my point, but it's true!!

Of course, Manchester and Salford are two completely different cities.

I'd say so far, nothing will beat Salford, and no, it's not really Manchester. It just isn't. In the same way Bradford ain't Leeds just because it's adjacent.

When Wales and West ran the Waterloo to Bristol service back in the 90s each train ran non stop through Salisbury.

Would Edinburgh on the Inverness/Aberdeen portions of the Highland Sleeper count, although the Sleeper stops there it's only to split or join, don't think passengers aren't allowed to alight & board from these portions of the Sleeper at Edinburgh?

It already shares a part of the train with the Glasgow Sleeper, so that is unnecessary unless they take away the Edinburgh portion of the Glasgow Sleeper, reduce it to 8 cars, and length the Highland Sleeper to 24 coaches after Waverley.

On a weekday at Reading there are several trains that are not booked to stop there.

1P16 07:06 Didcot Parkway to Paddington.
1L20 05:59 Swansea to Paddington.
1G60 17:42 Paddington to Cheltenham Spa.
1P16 runs fast Tilehurst to Twyford.
1L20 runs fast Swindon to Paddington.
1G60 runs fast Paddington to Didcot Parkway.

Is there any reason why these particular services don't stop at Reading when practically every other one does?

Not directly comparable, Salford is part of Greater Manchester and the urbanisation either side of the Irwell is representative of a single large city. Salford Central station itself is so named because it's within the Greater Manchester city centre - it's actually about as far away from the centre of Salford you can get, literally right on the border with Manchester.

What about Stockport? Don't certain XC services pass through without stopping?

That's a good shout, I know that the 07:32 Northern service from Manchester Piccadilly to Macclesfield passes straight through Stockport without stopping because I used to use it regularly. Sometimes I was the only passenger on the entire train and it felt like my own private service!

I knew someone would come in and argue. It's a bit of fun pal. PS I wouldn't fancy your chances of you winning your arguement with a genuine Salfordian.

As regards to services in the fairly recent past, I distinctly remember around 1990, one Northbound summer Saturday cross country service from Paignton running non-stop between Dawlish Warren and Derby, so that missed Exeter St Davids, Taunton, Bristol Temple Meads AND Birmingham New Street!

Were the Taunton and Bristol avoiding lines still in use then?

Used to be hourly on Sundays (the Manchester - Bristol services, skipped Stafford as well IIRC). But that changed last December I think (or was it May?). Not quite sure if any weekday services go through without stopping

Woking is skipped by a couple trains an hour off-peak,

The 17 platform station of Clapham Junction
There are many services that do not stop there.!!!

Yup. The hourly fast Portsmouth Harbour to Waterloo service (I boarded at Farnborough) runs fast from Woking doesn't call at CLJ. And that includes off peak services. Aside from the Gatwick Express there are quite possibly others.

I don't know of any non GEX services that pass through East Croydon.

Some peak hour Southerns from Victoria pass through Gatwick Airport without stopping, but no off peaks.

Dalmuir had at two such services, both in the weekday morning peak - 1Y20 (05:21 Oban to Glasgow Queen St; the only West Highland Line service not to call here, instead calling at Singer) & 1H60 (08:05 Helensburgh Central - Springburn, which runs non-stop in two sections; between Dumbarton East & Partick (with a brief signal stop at Jordanhill/Hyndland East Junction) & High Street & Springburn).

Haha - I thought it was a bit of a wind up but took the bait anyway

How do you know I'm not a genuine Salfordian though? ;)

You didn't react at the prospect at being potentially called a manc. Sends my workmates from Salford up the wall at the merest hint that their city isnt Salford! Great for fishing with them but I understand why!

Haha - well I do live on the Manc side of the Irwell. Only just though - takes me less than five minutes to walk across the border!

I was thinking, about 15 years ago, the "Cathedrals Express" from Hereford to Paddington used to go non-stop from Oxford to Paddington without stopping at Reading.
...
Are there currently any that pass through Reading without stopping? What about any other large station?
...
Lots of trains used to pass Reading without stopping. I'd question whether Reading is a "large" station. But I'd agree it is an "important" station - mainly because of its value as a railhead, particularly for LHR.
It's probably become much "easier" to stop trains at Reading simply to keep to a regular timetable, with regular paths and a clock-face service, or as clock-face as possible.

You could argue Watford Jcn used to be as important as Reading - but then Virgin WC decided it could be served by trains to Wolverhampton which could be extended - so nowadays few of the direct express services via the Trent Valley deign to stop.

Pretty sure there is a VTWC that doesn't stop at Preston and Carlisle once a day as well!

Been through Bristol TM & Parkway non stop on more than a few occasions with Padd - Plymouth & Penzance services at weekends and it's quite nice whizzing through Chippenham & Swindon at a good rate of knots too, nice change from pootling along on the desert called the B&H.

Indeed so. Welwyn Garden city also does. So does Chesterfield, and Doncaster, and Milton Keynes, and Chelmsford, and Bedford, and Luton...

You get the gist, all these places are much larger than Dalmuir and reguarly have trains miss them, it's not a brilliant example :)
