I'm not 100% on the validity of this method of saving (a lot) of money, so all help would be appriciated.

Assuming I have no railcard, a FOR from Stranraer-Penzance is £769 +ANY PERMITTED. This is valid via London.

However, a FOR Belfast NI-Penzance route Stranraer is £270. A whole £500 cheaper. Is this ticket valid via London?

Look at Liverpool-Inverness, an unrestricted standard return fare is £188. A Douglas IOM-Inverness ticket (valid via Liverpool) is only £122 return.

THE BEST FOR LAST

Indeed, a Dublin City (CIE) ticket is only £30 single to any station in the UK!!! as a walkup fare!

Dublin to Wick:

ECS - ECONOMY SINGLE ATW
00983 - HLYHD STENA CIV

1 Adult @£ 30.00 = £ 30.00
__________
£ 30.00

Standard Class Single

Outward Travel

Valid on date on ticket only.
Valid on Stena Line services
port to port only.
Reservations are compulsory on
the ship leg.
Break of journey on rail leg
only.
No unaccompanied children
under 16 permitted to travel.

Make a reservation, but don't use it?

You can even get them valid on the London Underground:

ECS - ECONOMY SINGLE ATW
00983 - +HLYHD STENA CIV

1 Adult @£ 30.00 = £ 30.00
__________
£ 30.00

Standard Class Single

I'm guessing so, looking at the routeing allowed for Stranraer to Penzance.

Another anomoly has shown up with FOR tickets here too - Not London tickets being more expensive than +Any Permitted so actually are valid via London - I wonder how many problems that causes on cross London transfers...

On reflection, the £30 fare could get a bit difficult to use:

You could only go the valid routes to your destination from Holyhead/Chester.

E.g. Dublin to Edinburgh. Look up valid routes from Holyhead.

This ticket is going to be of most use to people in the North West of England/NW Wales.

You can further reduce this to £29 single by using DUBLIN FYPT I.F. instead of Dublin City.

I recommend using raileasy for ticketing. I've used them many times and they prove to be a lot cheaper.

There does also appear to be a £32 fare via Rosslare, should anybody be travelling to/from South Wales or Bristol.

That £32 is valid from Rosslare to any UK rail station too. E.g. Rosslare-Wick £32. Useful :D

From the ticket conditions, though:

"All passengers must have a Sailing Control Ticket."

would this restrict it to port-bound journeys only, then?
