Which DMUs between Manchester/Southport?

Afternoon all. Am travelling south to Liverpool tomorrow, but heading via Wigan and Southport on the Merseyrail electrics. Could anyone tell me which trains typically operate the Manchester - Wigan - Southport route?

I'm not sure about that, 142s seem to be quite common on that route.

From memory, and it's two years since I lived in Formby, but I always seemed to have a 15x as opposed to a 14x.

Last few times I've been up there it has always been a 142.

Besides on the proportions, it will either be a 142/150/156.

I'd Say 142's are Common on Kirkby-Manc and Wigan-Manc but Southport-Manc seems to be in the 156/150

Interestingly the recently refurbed 156424 was on Southports Yesterday.

As a personal preference, I go via Kirkby, a LOT quicker and the journey is pleasant- you don't feel rushed, the train is quite empty etc...

Both 142036 and another pair of them were out on Friday so thats at least three diagrams which had 142's on, so can't be that rare.

As a general rule, is it not 142s for the Victoria services and 150/156 for the Piccadilly services, this pattern excluding diagrams which leave Manchester in the peaks?

Fast Pendo from Glasgow > Preston, calling Carlisle, Oxenholme and Preston, then change at Preston to the slow Pendo from Lancaster that calls Wigan, Warrington, London. Hop off at Wigan onto the Southport service.

NP. I do something similar - I go from MK to Manchester, as it's cheaper than getting to London, then transferring to a TPE service to Preston before getting onboard a Pendo. The connections work, surprisingly.

Southport-Wigan is my local line - live right next to it. Units used are 142s, 150s and 156s.

Before the December timetable change 156s were more common than 142s, but since the change I've noticed it to be the complete opposite, especially on the Manchester Airport services. The level of 150s has always been the same for quite some time, although someone who hadn't been down it before commented "there's a lot of 150s down here!"

There isn't any specific rule with regards to what units should operate what services as they seem to arrive at Southport ex-Victoria and depart to the Airport depending on the diagrams, although there was a time when 156s were preferred for the Airport services along with 150s, with 142s being preferred for the Victoria (then Rochdale) runs with 150s filling the gaps. One service that has a tendency to be a cert 142 is the 16.00 Southport-Huddersfield.
