From this week's Popbitch newsletter:

Riding with common people

Jarvis Cocker was nestled nice and comfortably in first class on the train to Festival No.6 last weekend, until he was asked by the conductor to present his ticket. Very politely, she pointed out that he had a standard ticket but was in a first class compartment – and promptly turfed him out to the prole carriages.

Which was embarrassing for Jarvis, sure. But embarrassing enough to stop him from trying to pull the same trick again on the train back from Bangor on Sunday afternoon? Nope.

Sadly for Jarvis, the same ticket lady was working the aisle on the Sunday – and she recognised him again.

Only this time, because the train was filled with people leaving the festival early because of a downpour, there were no seats free in standard for Jarvis to decamp to. So he had to stand by the toilet all the way back to London.

Lucky not to get charged for an upgrade, I'd say!

One rule for lanky 90s popstars... etc. ;)

Is he really that much of a tight-arse that he couldn't pay the £15 or whatever to upgrade?

Can't see Jarvis going through the app to find the best fares. More likely travel was provided by the festival (especially if they had a deal with Virgin, Fn6 branding did appear in places) or It was booked by his agents etc.

Should have been made to pay for a full price first class single on the way back if the same guard did catch him twice in 3 days.

Could even have reported for prosecution as a second time was clearly deliberate. Though I don't believe VT like to use the big stick very often due to the adverse publicity it tends to cause.
