ok firstly this is not inteded to be seen as offencive in any way and i apologise in advanced for any offence this could cause

I have been out and about filming and taking photos for a good year now and i have met loads of people along the way but one thing i have noticed is that i have not met a Enthusiast that is Black or Asian im sure there are some, just something i have noticed thats all

I've seen black people, Asian and women at the Warley model show, which was nice. Bigger the demographic the better.

I have actually met quite a few asian blokes on my journey's, none of any other demographic though.

The third rail enthusiast I ever met when I first got involved was an Asian guy, and we met through non enthusiast ways, so it was quite a surprise.

I can't remember his name (Might it have been ye, Asylum? :)) but one of the guys who came along to the Yule meet at St. Pancras was of an ethnic background...Although I can't say which background as - Apart from telling the basic differences in appearance between Africans, Asians and Caucasians - I can't identify specific races to save my life! :shock:

To be honest though, I've noticed the same thing in Black/Death Metal: Although there are a few ethnic followers of Metal (Especially in Israel, I believe) the number of Caucasians counted against other races is disproportionately high...Although in the case of Metal, I'd put that down to:
  • Metal being a more or less Western form of music,
  • A lot of the subject matter is such that it would be banned from stricter communities like Orthodox Judaism, and
  • The unfortunate incidence of Nazism and other facist groups in the Metal community...Although that's something that the more accepting and open minded amongst us have sworn to put to the Sword in the most horrific, Gory and Bloodthirsty manner! <D
And just to finish on an amusing and jocular note: Being both a Metalhead and an Aryan (That is to say that I have a visibly Nordic appearance) I do sometimes get people making assumptions about me and asking me if I'm a racist. My usual response to such questions though has to be "Aye, I am a race-ist...I'll race anybody!" :lol::D

I used to think it was just my generation, but there seem to be quite a few younger enthisiasts into 1980s music. Theme from S-Express being a 'grid' anyone? :p

It's very worrying that was 20 years ago! Loco hauled was already pretty much out (apart from Cross-county and a bit here and there on NSE) and there was hardly any blue/grey left. Rail enthusiast magazine had just about changed it's name to Rail, and ECML electrification was fully in progress, with York and Tyneside IECCs in the progress of being commissioned.

oh yeah theres that guy, i mean those that are in the UK. That vid is funny though he says about MTU`s being great yet he has a pic of a Valenta powered HST on his background

We seem to have gone a bit off topic here, maybe we need a separate section for 1980s music fanatics! I'm surprised none of you commented on my thread on the 'Here and Now 2009' concert in General Discussion a couple of weeks ago.

PLEASE NO! Not that horrible rancid and disgusting word! Call them Valentas or Paxmans at least. Val is used by complete stoats who don't have a clue. :roll:

Who is Val anyway? The trolley Dolly? Short for Valerie?

Its the only time i have ever used the word Val i always call them Valenta, i said Val because i wrote it in a hurry

He's very annyoing for voicing his opinion?

He was merely expressing his opinion and of course you had to post a video of someone making fun of him. So what if he didn't mention GNER? So what if the picture and the model he was holding represented something that had a different engine in it? He likes HSTs for their looks and their legacy, not what currently powers the majority of them. He has a good point, which I've seen many here agree with. Yes, I'm an American, and yes, I'm sticking up for him. He's interested in something beyond the borders of his country, which is rare. Be supportive of him and know he wants to support your economy. I love your trains and your country, which is why I came here. I'm sure he does too. Have some heart.

As for the topic of this thread, I've found the same thing. It's unusual to find a non-white enthusiast in our parts of the world, but they're there. The hobby seems to be dominated by the more wealthy people with more time on their hands. Just an observation.

That can only be a good thing. GNER is extremely over-rated on this forum and others (it's up there with the biggest piles of froth in existance, along with Valentas, Virgin to Shrewsbury and the Liverpool to Norwich route).
