So, I've noticed if you purchase a ticket using Guest Checkout on the Crosscountry Mobile Website the only time it asks for your name is during the payment "Name on Card" section

So as expected I put my name in that box as its show on my card (This is for example, not my real name in this thread)

Mr S C Catt

Upon receiving my tickets, all thats listed on the ticket is

C Catt

Why do they think this is acceptable? The ticket is now only valid for a "C Catt" to travel and no longer matches my 16-25 rail card what displays Mr S Catt. If I don't notice before boarding the train, I wouldn't have a valid ticket.

Wouldn't it be more appropriate for the full name given. Or the page ask what name you would like on the ticket?

(Edit, wasn't sure if this should have been put here or the Fare Advice forum)

Is this an orange ticket that's come in the post or collected from a machine, or an actual mobile ticket you'll show on your device?

I doubt they think it's "acceptable"... this just looks like a bug on the mobile website to me. Why not speak to them about it?

The name on the ticket is part of the details of purchase. It has nothing to do with who is able to use the ticket, you can use the ticket (whatever your name is)

Collected from the machine. Put card in - take it out - input collection details - get ticket

Ah OK, sorry about that.

I thought that the ticket had to match the railcard. So I should have been fine anyway if I held my RailCard, ID, Credit Card I paid with and the confirmation

-----------

All I was worried about was the inspector thinking the ticket was meant for someone else and I just so happened to be using it

No problem then. Orange tickets aren't tied to one person and it's not a "named ticket" like that. Your mum could have bought it for you and her name be on the ticket on that bottom orange strip, but you could still use it.

While the name should be irrelevant for ordinary "orange card" tickets, it isn't for "self-print" (which some TOCs seem to call "e-tickets" despite the fact that an ordinary sheet of paper is less "electronic" than a card with a magnetic strip...) tickets.

Additionally, there's a good chance that some staff won't be fully aware of the difference, since it's unusual for "orange card" tickets to have a name printed on them at all, so you may well get questioned or misinformed.

Thanks for the info

Think all my Advanced Fare tickets have had names at the bottom, VTWC ticket had my correct name on it, but this was because it asked for my First/Last name rather than Name on Card.

Oh well... All is good anyway. I'll keep that in mind when I next book via the XC website anyway

It's not unusual at all, most booking engines and printers display the name at the bottom. All of my ToD-fulfilled tickets in the last year have done so.

The name printed on the ticket has literally nothing to do with validity. The only time the name does have any impact is if it is an e-ticket where some ToC's require some kind of ID. But for normal orange tickets, the name means nothing. Which granted can confusing!

Did you leave a space between Mr S C Catt? Otherwise the system may recognize it as Mrs C Catt hence the name shown on the ticket is correct

I think the name is just an example to match his forum name

There would be a problem if the name did have to match that of the passenger, as many Trainline bookings come up with the surname as Customer and the address as just Incomplete!

Because my work purchase tickets through trainline, I regularly end up travelling on tickets that have someone else's name on them (the name of the person who does the booking). It's never been a problem with Virgin, Northern, or Cross Country; even when using some of VTWC's discounted business tickets.

The name printed on the ticket shouldnt have any relevance. Anyone can purchase a ticket on behalf of someone else, but it is the ticket holders responsibility to ensure the ticket is valid for the journey the ticket holder wishes to undertake. The ticket cannot be transferred to anyone else. I.e the ticket holder cannot give up the ticket to pass on to someone else during or otherwise to then complete the journey.
