xxx Stations - For ticketing purposes

Can anyone point me to where I can find details of what stations are 'grouped' together for ticketing purposes as opposed to station groups within the routeing guide?

I specifically want to find out if Hilsea and Cosham are covered by a 'Portsmouth Stations' ticket, although knowing of a place where I can find details of all such groupings, would probably be useful in the future.

No, Hilsea and Cosham are not part of Portsmouth Stations. (Only Portsmouth Harbour and Southsea are).

You may be able to break your journey there, however, and decide to terminate your journey entirely. This depends on your ticket type, route and any easements/restrictions.

I don't have a full list, but just so you get an aswer quicker I can tell you that Hilsea and Cosham aren't covered by Portsmouth stations.
Were will you be coming from? If you are coming from the Southampton direction, it may be possible to take a break of journey.
Also, may I suggest to the moderators that this thread is pinned to the top of the board, as it will be useful for referance in the future.

There's a list on Wikipedia, but if you want a reliable source, take a look here. In column W it will tell you what group the station is part of.

A possibly easier method would be to look on Avantix traveller. Input the journey you are undertaking and double click on the fare; underneath the price it will say what group stations are applicable, so if I enter EUS to BHM, it will correct it to

From : 1072 LONDON TERMINALS
To   : 0418 BIRMINGHAM STNS

Obviously this won't always be the case, for example if going between two stations in the same group it would display the station names concerned.

Also, just a word of warning, we have covered this in the past, but for anyone who has missed it, but Group stations for ticketing are different from Group stations for routeing.

For anyone in the future with similar queries, the full list currently as listed on the FRPP is below. The list on Wikipedia is only accurate up to the NFM 68 ( Jan 98 ) as stated in the "Sources" section at the bottom of its page however I cannot find any differences from the list posted there and the list below.

So Cosham is not a member of the Portsmouth Stations group.

If you already have a ticket purchased to Portsmouth Stations, your best option if you now want to travel to Cosham/Hilsea, is to, before you travel, head to the ticket office and request an " Overdistance Excess Fare" to the station you now wish to travel to. This excess fare will be charged at the difference in price from your origin station to Portsmouth Stations and from your origin station to your new final destination.

What I was hoping to do was get a Guildford to Portsmouth Stations day return, but on the outward journey change at Havant for Cosham. Do a couple of things there, then catch a bus into Portsmouth and return from Portsmouth & Southsea later in the day.

So I think the best way to do this now would be to get a Guildford - Portsmouth Stations as planned, stop short at Havant and then get a single to Cosham?

Indeed, or if you are using a train that stops at Bedhampton, a Bedhampton to Cosham single will be fine.

There aren't any direct trains from Bedhampton to Cosham, NRE tells you to go via Havant!! Although it is 20p less than the Havant fare

Does this mean that as long as I am on a Guildford to Portsmouth train which stops at Bedhampton I can get off at Havant and a Bedhampton - Cosham ticket will be valid on the direct Havant to Cosham service, which doesn't stop at Bedhampton?

I wish this really was as clear cut as that!

Both stations are members of Portsmouth Group, as such you are only permitted to travel via the shortest distance...

Only, in this case there is no direct service for the shortest distance so what do you do?

Two answers - travel via Havant (and double back through Bedhampton), or travel via Hilsea. Both of which are not strictly allowed by the Routeing Guide - Havant breaks two rules (shortest distance and double back), Hilsea one (shortest distance).

Doubling back through Bedhampton (via Havant) would be the next shortest route - a whole 7 chains shorter than via Hilsea!

I'm sure that in such a localised case both are informally accepted by guards (depending on quickest journey) with no formal arrangement for what to do. I'd certainly ask a guard down in that area what their take on the matter is, and if any local instructions are issued.

From what I can see, your best option (assuming you double check the fares) would be to buy a Guildford to Swanwick ticket.

I will work you through my reasoning:

1. Swanwick has both Portsmouth & Southampton, fares check rule says that you should use Portsmouth
2. Only map Guildford to Southampton is PD
3. Map PD takes you into Portsmouth, and you'd have to take the shortest route out, via Cosham
4. Doubling back is allowed as Portsmouth group includes all stations you'd be doubling back through
5. Guildford & Swanwick are outside Portsmouth group so you can benefit from the grouping
