If i remember correctly, the Metrobuses were replaced by AN68's from MTL, before Heysham Travel were taken-over. Upon take-over the AN68's were replaced ECW bodied Olympians.

Yes, there were AN68s I remember them arriving at Morecambe for storage before onward sale they didnt stay long. The only HT vehicles that stayed were a Volvo B10M coach and 3 Leyland Tiger coaches. Anyway enough diversion from the thread back to the present day......

All quiet today as expected for a Sunday, 17023 was on the University shuttle X3. Tomorrow sees a Sunday service with extra buses to the University on service 3.

At the bus station there is a big long time table for the X3. Is the 3 on a Sunday meant to be an X3 or a 3? A far as I know the X3 was a short lived service from Common Garden street the University.

I think if its a case of it being a roller blind Trident its an X3 and if its anything else its a 3, the Tridents not having a suitable 3 on the top!

As far as Im aware its meant to run as a 3 but without serving the southwest campus like the weekday service does. Todays 3 was running as an X3 but you are corrct in that the X3 was a short lived service I think the layover at Common Garden St was a problem with a bus blocking the stand up, and Queens Square not being suitable either as it causes a traffic jam!

Nothing much else to be honest. A MAN on the 40, bunch of Tridents on he 2a/3 and that's about it.

Just had 16660 on the 2. Very nice job all round but it hasn't had a new floor. Also on the LED you can only see half the number on the right hand side. This is similar the the ones Barrow has that I have seen working the X35. It cut off half the X on the left hand side. Any way still looks brilliant.

Normal stuff dashing about. 21007 on the 3. Also 17024 has had its bay link branding removed leaving only the outline where it used to be.

17024 will presumably be getting a repaint soon then.

There's nothing that can be done about cropping on the displays - it's caused by the dispalys being bigger than the window for them. ISTR I've seen it with brite techs on some vehicles as well.

14195 on the X3 this morning. Couple of buses circling the bus station because there was no room lol. Everything else was normal.

16663 on the 3 last night still with its old Hanover.

Just seen 14204 heading through Bowerham full of people but with no destination. Either the blind was broken or it was a private service.

Quite a lot of Trident 2's on the 2/2a with a handful of 2005 Tridents on the Preston routes.

Also last night a Trident on the 3 was showing the correct destinations i.e Just Greaves rather then the prom etc.

roadworks are taking the p*ss at the minute! especially outside the new Netto!!!
its pretty bus un-friendly on there at minute! the "wait here when red light shows" sign is too close to the actual roadworks! quite a few times my usual coach driver has nearly went into the car waiting there, or brought some of the cones with us!!!!!

is 25225 definately leaving us in place of a MAN? cos only MAN's that will be available are V reg!!! i will not be happy if a V reg replaces 08 reg!!!!!

The Office of Fair Trading has ruled on the acquisition of Preston Bus by Stagecoach - and it would appear they are not happy with it as it is being referred to the Competion Commision. Presumably, this will mean that any further changes Stagecoach have in the pipeline will have to be put on hold?

OFT refers Stagecoach's Preston Bus acquisition to Competition Commission
62/09 28 May 2009

The OFT has referred the acquisition of Preston Bus Limited by Stagecoach Bus Holdings Limited to the Competition Commission.

Both Stagecoach and Preston Bus provide local bus services in Preston and, as a result of this acquisition, Stagecoach has become the predominant provider of commercial bus services in this area.

Given the absence of any evidence of likely entry in the short to medium term by other bus operators, the OFT was concerned that this could result in higher prices or decreased service quality to local bus users.

The OFT was made aware that Preston Bus was in significant financial difficulties prior to its sale, and carefully considered whether it could be characterised as a 'failing firm'. However, while it is possible that Preston Bus may have failed and gone into administration had it not been sold, the OFT was not confident that all the failing firm conditions were met to the standard required for a first phase investigation. Specifically, it considered that there could have been a more competitive alternative to the merger: given the interest in Preston Bus expressed by other bidders, the OFT could not rule out that Preston Bus' assets could have been used by another operator to enter the market and compete against Stagecoach.

Amelia Fletcher, OFT Senior Director of Mergers, said:

'Stagecoach and Preston Bus were very close competitors, as demonstrated by the so-called 'bus wars' that took place in Preston prior to the acquisition. This merger has removed competition between them and the OFT is concerned that this may have a negative impact on price and service levels for bus users.'

NOTES
1. Failing firm - The OFT's approach to assessing an exiting (including failing) firm defence was recently articulated in the 'Restatement of OFT's position regarding acquisitions of 'failing firms' that it will clear a transaction based on 'failing firm' claims only where it has sufficient compelling evidence that (a) absent the merger, the target business would have inevitably exited with no serious prospect of re-organisation, and (b) there was no realistic and substantially less anti-competitive alternative to the merger.

2. The Reference Test - the OFT has a duty to make a reference to the Competition Commission if the OFT believes that it is or may be the case that a relevant merger situation has been created, and the creation of that situation has resulted or may be expected to result in a substantial lessening of competition within any market or markets in the United Kingdom for goods or services.

3. Own-initiative merger inquiries - while the majority of mergers reviewed by the OFT arise from voluntary notification by the parties, the OFT's own-initiative inquiry programme has led to remedial action by the OFT or CC in 20 cases under the Enterprise Act 2002 regime. In some of these cases, it is always possible that the parties would have voluntarily notified the OFT of their merger at a later date. The OFT has a dedicated Mergers Intelligence officer responsible for monitoring non-notified merger activity and liaising with other competition authorities. That person can be contacted confidentially at mergers.intelligence@oft.gov.uk if any interested party wishes to make the OFT aware of a merger that it considers might potentially be anti-competitive.

4. Under the Enterprise Act 2002 a relevant merger situation is created if two or more enterprises have ceased to be distinct enterprises, and the value of the turnover in the United Kingdom of the enterprise being taken over exceeds £70 million, or as a result of the transaction, in relation to the supply of goods or services of any description, a 25 per cent share of supply in the UK (or a substantial part thereof) is created or enhanced.

5. The full text of this decision will appear in the mergers section.

16734 entered Workington Bus Station around 0930 this morning with "1 FRIZINGTON" visible on the LED, until you got to an angle when it said "31 FRIZINGTON". it then changed to "Carlisle 300".
20752 on 31.
47616 on Moorclose Circular 51.
47023 on Moorclose Circular 50.
all 3 Marshall Darts on Harrington & Seaton
20759 on 48 and later X5.
20759, 20761, 52628 and 52629 on X4's and X5's.
40445 was on the morning X5.
14257 was around this morning, as was 14234. both running empty.
14258 on evening 600.

in Keswick:
42025 was covering for Osprey Bus on the 74.
33076 was on Seatoller 78, which was a BIG mistake! 29 seated with 17 standees! it was really busy today! i'd guess that there was more than 17 standees on it!!!!!!!!!!! pretty stupid allocating a short dart to a route that is usually Open Top Titan!!!
one of Kendal's ALX400's (can't remember which one now) was in Keswick Bus Station at 555 stand, refusing to change the display from a Dallam School service! we saw "D2 Dallam School D2"; "1A Dallam School 1A"; "D3 Dallam School D3" and "D6 Dallam School D6". after 3 mins of fighting with the control unit, the inspector finally managed to got it to show "555 LANCASTER".
P108 DCW (forgot the numnber) was on 554, which is usually Leyland Olympian operated.

Typically, it's an organisation being behind in their press releases.

The take over was referred to the CC way back in March or April, along with the takeover of Cavendish.
This is the reason why repaints of ex-Preston vehicles have stopped, and why the Lynxs and MetroRiders are still at Lillyhall...Stagecoach can't legally dispose of them.

Hardly, if it wasn't one of Kendal's drivers doing the change, the inspector will have gone through just about every setting to get it.

I'll explain. Kendal, rather than having different destinations on the one number have them stored differently. So if you don't know what you're looking for, it can take a while and AIUI the LEDs automatically update after a certain time, even if OK is not pressed.

driver couldn't change it haha.
he got it from "555 KESWICK" onto "D2 Dallam School D2", then couldn't get it off, so he called the inspector over, who was from Carlisle depot!
by the time they got it sorted, and went to shut the doors, the engine cut out with the idle timer things they have, so even more time was wasted! driver didnt simply turn it back on, he sat there, gave a big sigh, got a drink, closed doors, and then started it!

Surely it will all go through. They can't resurrect Preston Bus, and nobody else wants to go into Preston to compete against Stagecoach - so they've got it sewn up.

Wrong in 1991, Stagecoach was ordered to dispose of Portsmouth Citybus, which it sold to Transit Holdings. Then in 1996, Transit Holdings was aquired by Stagecoach. So Stagecoach aquired Portsmouth Citybus for a second time.

Plus way back in the 80s I think, Stagecoach were ordered out of Perth I think it was, after they set up several services in and around the surrounding area.
