Here is a picture of the Class 379. This picture isnt mine! it was taken from another forum. If mods have a problem with with, feel free to move it :)

Any comments?

I wonder why Bombardier seem to be going for a rounded window like on 172s (well thats what the artists inpression shows)

If you credit the forum it would be much better...

looks fantastic. especially suited to the NX livery. I hope it doesnt end up in yet another stupid stansted express livery. The new rounded windows on the electrostar look much better.

Is there a technical reason why Bombardier would adjust the existing window design or is it just aesthetics?

Aesthetics/current family design. Might be a manufacturing benifit.

GospelOak- the current Stansted Express units are bieng painted exactly the same as the rest of the NXEA 317 fleet, but with with "Stansted Express" instead of "National Express" on the side. Same logo style. Says "East Anglia" on them too. Unless there's a change of franchisee, that's pretty much certain to be the livery those will be turned out in.

Thanks for that I get confused by the amount of liveries seen on NXEA including about 4 different Stansted variations including the one you have just mentioned. National Express take so long to re-brand this network everytime there is a franchise/brand change, hopefully they retain the franchise in the next round as their new corporate image is one of the best on National Rail I think.

So is 379 the offical class designation? and are they due to have Dellner couplers as per the picture, making them compatible with NXEA 360's but not their sister Class 357?

Who decides on class designation? These new units look like 375/377s but if they're AC-only, won't they be more closely related to the 357s, or has the technology driving the units moved on somewhat since the 357s were introduced?

The Class 360s were originally designed with corridor connections but I think this was changed due to platform visibility problems. Could the same problem occur with the 379s or is this not an issue due to a) these units working the WA rather than GE where visibility isn't an issue, or b) the 379s coming from Bombardier rather than Siemens and thus having completely different specifications?

Hm - "Stansted Express East Anglia"? Daft corporate branding! Does that mean XC will call their trains "Stansted Express Brummieland"?

'East Anglia' is the division of National Express out of Liverpool Street, (separating it from NXEC & the coaches).
Having 'Stansted' instead of 'National' is just way of separating express units from commuter services, while still showing a universal brands. Not the best way of doing things IMO, but it's they way they're being done.

Regarding the liveries on the Stansted Express' :

317/7 = Dark metallic blue, did have 'Stansted Express' written in Orange.
317/8 = Light blue, (I am led to believe it was originally meant to be the same colour as the /7s, but dried a different colour).
317729 = Lighter metallic blue with orange stripes at the car ends, like the 'one' rainbow livery.
Then theres the new livery which can be seen above, currently being applied.

In adition to the above, non-dedicated units, (/6's and /5's) are often put onto Stansted services, meaning you also see the ex-WAGN and ex-'one' liveries.

Looks nice. I take it this is now the standard configuration that they are looking at for new trains? With the gangway in the middle a'la Desiro and the new Class 380?

Being an airport train, and only having two tracks, I presume NXEA have decided to get the train to fly to Stansted instead. It solves a whole load of problems, although it no doubt creates a few new ones...

For a start, the driver is going to need to do a more detailed safety announcement beyond 'look at the safety notices displayed throughout the train'.

Is it me or does that train look like it's levitating...

It doesn't need roads where it's going- Bombardier have clearly been working hard on that flux capacitor. After all, it'll be more than capable of 88mph. Can the OHL supply 1.2 Gigawatts though?

etc.

As for the branding- they don't say "Stansted Express East Anglia" all in one go- the "Stansted Express" bit is between the doors, and the "East Anglia" towards (as you look at it) the right hand end of the car.

It does amaze me how non-dedicated the Stan Ex fleet is; it's really rather common for those units to be up at Cambridge. Comfier seats on them, mind, so as a commuter I'm not complaining!

Bombardier might wish to stop designing flying trains and ones that can jump around through time and simply build the ones they've already been contracted to make. :D

I would say aesthetics personally. People are psychologically more likely to prefer a train with nice, round edges and corners, as a pose to one with sharp, pointy, aggressive-looking corners. ;)

I agree, being sleek and streamline people will think it'll be a quick connection to the airport, livery looks good too.

What point are trying to make,
In the past we had networkers, that covered 165, 166 , 365 , 465 and 466,
Before that we had Pacers and Sprinters again covering a large number of clases.
Southern had EPB's and that covered a great number of variants.
Go to 1st generatation DMU's we had Derby's , Met cams etc.
The name refers to a familly of stock , in this case from a manufacturer.
Cant see a car maker giving a model different names just because it is for different dealers, so why shouls a rolling stock manufacturer bee any different?

but there are only 5 Networkers in the family but there was another 2 proposed, and BR didnt take the mick with the names they made about 5 or 6 of the family and that was that, then they moved on and can i just say EPBs there were only 2 types BR design and bullied design, these days most 3XX's are ELECTROSTAR,and 1XX are turbostar and that was all i was saying ,why cant bombardier move on and make another name and diffrent design because they all look the same except the 357 which is a electric 170 to me,and can i say aswell there vauxhall have made 4 diffrent vectras, then this year an update off that come out and was called the insignia,i dont mind 5 or 6 but passed that is just it for me,it gets boring after like this proposed class 379,it looks like IR's 180

Sorry - I forgot Siemens, Bombardier, Alstom etc should take into mind the needs of the railway enthusiast when deciding on designs and marketing names. Perhaps you could email them your suggestion and see how long it takes until they kindly tell you to jog on?

,these days most 3XX's are ELECTROSTAR,and 1XX are turbostar

how did you work that out only;
5 types of electrostar 357,375,376,377, 378* (* = 378's will be capitalstars)
3 types of turbostar at the moment 168*,170,171 ( * = 168's are more commonly know as clubmans)(172's will be the next turbostars).

these days most 3XX's are ELECTROSTAR
Of the 24 3XX classes currrntly running; 4 are Electrostars.

and 1XX are turbostar
There are only 3 types of Turbostar.

and can i say aswell there vauxhall have made 4 diffrent vectras, then this year an update off that come out and was called the insignia
How is that even relevant?
If you really want to use your own example, then what about the Astra? That's been going since 1979, and they havent changed the name.
The Ford Fiesta; that name's been going since 1976
The BMW 3 series, that was originally from 1975, it's still called the same thing, the 5 series was 1972.
