Can I turn this thread upside down and suggest that Keighley used to be 1 station and is now 2?

Did Tamworth operate as 2 separate stations in the past?

Keighley sprung to mind but that is two separate stations now and only one in the past.

It may be two different stations operationally, but I'd argue that as both sections are linked and have shared buildings, it's still one. If a tourist asked a local where the station was, they wouldn't be asked which one they meant, I'd have thought.

I'm not sure about this; if it is two station why is there, for example, a sign saying "Way out and to Platforms 1 & 2"?

How do you define a station? ;)

Welshpool (NR) and Welshpool Raven Square (W&LLR)

Heathrow LUL - and an entirely new line linking the airport with London Paddington

Merseyrail with the Wirral lines underground loop

didn't recent flood damage result in at least one line cut in two and a temporary station built until repairs carried out?

Porthmadog, where the Welsh Highland (1964) constructed a new station and railway which will now never run beyond the immediate area. And back in the days of the original WHR, in order to economise Portmadoc New was created

Neither of these were originally one station - nor were Workington and W North.

St Pancras certainly feels like 4 separate stations linked my a shopping mall.

Would Limehouse qualify for this? Treated as a single station but transfers between Essex Thameside (or whatever it's called this week) and DLR involve going through 2 gatelines don't they?

In the sense that both stations were known as Waterloo at one time?

There was once a direct rail connection between the main station and East, you could certainly make a good argument for it being a single station back then.

I've never been, but what is the signage situation and Smallbrook Junction I wonder.

Smallbrook Junction didn't exist as a station in pre IoWSR days (any interchange between Newport and Ventnor lines would have been at Ryde St Johns). There is still no foot access to it, so it's only accessible when the steam line is running.

AFAIK both platforms were built at the same time.

However the connecting walkway re-used the trackbed, so the rail connection would have been between two very nearby, but separate and differently named, stations. The present high-level walkway came later. For a while (after the walkway was opened) the easternmost station was renamed Waterloo, but eventually regained a separate name.

Paddington (Hammersmith & City) platforms 15 & 16 used to be integrated with the main station (indeed GWR platforms), with the same footbridge access. Now there are effectively separate station.

You could argue that the old Platforms 1-3 at Newcastle Central were replaced by the Metro station below ground providing the service round the coast. Hence 1 station became 2.

Also on a Metro theme, would you class Heworth as 2 stations?

Except that the SE(C)R station was called Waterloo Junction back then IIRC. Physically the two were separate, with separate booking offices, until quite recently (when the high level walkway was built).

And Waterloo LSWR was reputedly 3 or 4 separate stations, which qualifies for the mirror thread!

I'm not entirely sure of the history, but would Retford count?

Birkbeck. Originally a single two-platform station, but since the arrival of Tramlink each platform is now its own station.

There are a couple in Nottingham where the railway has been singled and the other line used by the trams, but I don't know whether they're considered one or two stations.

Navigation Road (Altrincham): One NR, one Metrolink
Altrincham: Two NR, two Metrolink

To all intents and purposes Altrincham is one station, surely? You don't have to exit from one part to get to the other or pass through any gatelines to transfer from train to tram or vice-versa.

...but as the Merseyrail platform was purpose-built to be the Lime St platform on the Wirral line, is still called Lime St and has direct access by lift can it be considered to be 2 stations now?

Given the Balkanisation of our railway following franchising it is a great relief that we are having such difficulty thinking of examples outside the preservation world... like Paignton - which is really a new station built nearby. I guess the most likely candidates will always be where light rail has taken over part of the trackbed of the real railway.

How about Kirkby in Merseyside? Started as one station on a through route, now arguably two separate stations as the two platforms are on two different routes and it is no longer possible to go all the way through
