I was playing around on Nationalrail.co.uk and I found what appears to be a strange anomaly.

If a day return from Worcester to Barnt Green via Kidderminster is typed in, the price comes up as £7.30.

So, this is travelling from Worcester to Birmingham Snow Hill/ Moor Street (via Kidderminster), and then walking across to New Street and then travelling to Barnt Green.

I know going this way would take longer to get from Worcester to Barnt Green (the usual way would take me via Bromsgrove, changing at University station).

But, what would happen if I bought this ticket and simply didn't go the last leg of the journey? So, I go from Worcester to Birmingham Moor Street/Snow Hill and just spend the day in Birmingham?

This would save about £2 on the price of an off-peak day return from Worcester to Birmingham.

Presumably break of journey / cutting journey short is allowed on this ticket, and anyway, who would be monitoring me to actually make sure I actually walked from Snow Hill to New Street and got on a train to Barnt Green?

Is this a legitimate way for me to save £2? Can I buy this ticket in person at the station?

More than likely. Plenty of these anomalies exist. However I'd let someone who knows tell you for sure.

Yes, you would be fine to do that. No-one will know. And it doesn't matter anyway, as you are perfectly valid to break your journey.

Welcome to the super-complex world of fares.
