Multiple cancellations in West Wales tomorrow, Monday, with the Pembroke Branch services decimated. All local services involved and Manchester Marches not affected. Have caught the GWR phraseology of "More units than usual needing repairs". We know they were affected by the recent storm after hitting tress but I thought this had now been overcome. Bustitution arranged.

"More units than usual needing repairs". At least 3 cancellations on the Cambrian last week with that reason. Control took the decision to take the unit off the 0630 Aberystwyth to Shrewsbury to run the 0652 Machynlleth to Pwllheli on Monday and terminated it at Machynlleth. The school train on the coast ran but it left 40-50 commuters to Welshpool/Shrewsbury without a train at Newtown.

Quite a few 4 car diagrams ran with 2 cars on Friday as well.

The wording of that quotation indicates that's an event which happens on an odd day. On GWR, and ATW starting to go the same way, this has been peddled day in and day out since about May.

Although that doesn't make it untrue.

I think you'll find most/all operators reliant on mostly 80s DMUs for their services are having the same problem now that things like PRM mods are biting.

ATW haven't even started their PRM Mods yet but that's another story.

Indeed not - but whenever I have cause to dump a train on Crewe CS there's always a number of their units in bits in the shed under overhaul.

They're down a Class 150 I presume after one attacked a tree a couple of weeks ago? The press photos seemed to show one set of doors stoved in, so that's a long holiday at Wolverton/Kilmarnock or wherever I'd imagine? Is there still a 175 out of traffic after one of the farm crossing incidents?

There were 12 ATW units of all classes that suffered tree bash damage during Storm Aileen. 175005 is out of action with a damaged cab but there hasn't been a farm crossing collision for ages now.

Twelve, ouch! Most of them now back at work, I presume? I lose track of tractor smashes, they seem to happen with alarming regularity :| Was 005 the hay bales incident?

I doubt it. The Hay Bale incident was over 5 years ago now.

The hay bales was 002 (and is still known to some within ATW as "The Haymaker" as a result.

The marches has been affected as well - no preplanned cancellations but a lot of 2 car vice 3 out and about. There was also a part cancellation last night when a 3 car failed at Church Stretton. The North Wales LHCS was out of action yesterday as well I believe although thankfully it's back out today.

Talking of bashing trees, I see the Clarbeston Road - Fishguard Harbour line is indeed of some "pruning". I travelled on it going to and from Ireland via the ferry at Fishguard last week and there was a few loud bangs as we hit overhanging trees, there's a couple of big ones especially between Goodwick and the Harbour.
