I hope that all those involved will have a thoroughly enjoyable day, passengers, staff, and all the casual observers.

A great innovation by those responsible. Chapeau!

Especially with the IC leaving 3mins behind at 16:27.

There must be some leeway whereby maybe a couple can be sidelined to allow a fast-ish dash down the ML ? may even generate some good publicity for both NR and AGA ! (but then I suppose it would be down to who pays the delay!)
Maybe the Clacton could run EL and allow 1G04 to pass ? :)

Can't go too quick and undermine the case for the new trains. ;)

At 100 mph timings the 16.02 Ipswich would be in danger of getting run down too. Clacton pfm 4 at Shenfield, Ipswich pfm 1 at Colchester would have been a nice idea.

TfL Rail would object.

There is 6 mins between the 'Ipswich' and the 'Special' at Colchester, if I am still here, and it's close enough......:)

Running the Clacton through 4 wouldn't affect them.

But the comment said put the Clacton on the ELs. Which platform 4 are you talking about?

If it's Shenfield then that would mean holding the Clacton 8mins. Witham maybe a possibility but there's a time penalty.

At Shenfield (post #7) Crossing the Fens just now so keep loosing signal!

I meant in the planning stage. In practice if the 68s are as good as some say, despite the weight I'd expect the special to be much closer, especially as the Clacton calls at Stratford.

That would mean holding it 16:41-16:49. Platform 4 is available at Witham but 1P44 is hot on the heels so putting 1N38 away will cause a hit to the IC.

How about the Clacton bi-di Church Lane to Chelmsford and the Special running past, maybe not what bi-di is for, but not unknown !

All very true, but the special has what appears to be a generous 26 mins to get to Shenfield. Of course with no real experience of them on the GEML that may prove to be correct if they struggle up Brentwood bank, we will see....

There are engineering works of some description today hence all trains are timed to leave Lst 2-3mins early. As has been the case for many Sunday's now all UML trains use 10 & DML the Temple Mills then 10A.

Yes that's probably the bit that scuppered it at the outset. Look out for the up EL being in a different place between Stratford and Bow Jn on Monday.

Been noticing all the new crossrail works & newly laid rail at Pudding Mill Lane.

Needs some pro-active signalling / routing by the Signallers at Liverpool Street :)

Send them to Colchester for a few tips :p

Top bloke on the Colchester/Manningtree panel last night. He would be good as a used car salesman as made me feel so positive about the inevitable up ahead. Then stranded me the wrong side of the tunnel & cut the juice

Darren on Colchester, was another guy on Ipswich, however I suppose once an Emergency Isolation is requested, it's 'bang' all off !

The run (1G03) up the GEML looks dire too !

1G03 certainly didn't call at Ipswich as it went through centre road. 68001 is London end with 68034 Norwich end.

It was booked to stand 4 mins at Ipswich, it was not until it left Norwich that it was noticed that it stood on the 'TL' for that time, in the end it was running a tad late and kept going :)

We did try for Norwich in 90 but only managed 105 in the end, would have been nice if the Clacton had paid a visit to p4 at Witham to allow us to pass (especially as it was 3 early on arrival) but realistically it was waiting for an Ipswich-Cambridge in both directions to pass over Haughley that killed it.

It wasn't planned to be a high speed run but it could have been, we even had the rear loco doing the ETS to take that load off the front. A damn good run anyway and an enjoyable day had. I will post the total raised when it's in the public domain!

It was announced on the train that over £12,500 had been raised.

All credit to GA and DRS for going ahead with this - such events always needs lots of detailed planning. So a big well done and thank you to all involved.

Yeah I was aware I was one of the staff on board, that was the total on the day there's a few other bits to come in before we know the final total.

Thanks for your comments I hope you enjoyed yourself!

When I left for home, 1G04 was well behind the Cambridge, and I would have thought it would have been clear of Haughley by the time you got there, however of course the night shift wary of getting an 'OC' would have run the Ipswich bound Cambridge first, The Special was booked Haughley at 1747 and 2W25 at 1741, personally I would have taken the hit and the subsequent OC on the Cambridge in order to allow a 'spririted run' !

I reckon you would have done it 100 or 99 without the 'check', bearing in mind what you were stuck behind as far as Colchester, a darn good effort :)

The Cambridge we followed would have cost us a minute or two at most, it was the Ipswich bound unit being allowed over in front that killed it. IF the Clacton had been moved at Witham and we could have got in right behind the Cambridge before haughley to beat the Ipswich to the junction, then followed the coat tails of the 1600 down into Norwich we could *just* have done it in 90.

Drivers were happy, guard was happy, passengers very happy to have had a fast run! Nice to put -15 on the sheila for a change rather than +15...

Just a shame the IECC did not enter into the spirit of it, but then again ARS rules the day, they of course could have taken it out of ARS :)
