its amazing the amount of posts we get critisising Sprinters, Turbos and new stock, at the same time we get posts praising the HST and how they are the best on the network and shouldnt be replaced.
Now in Scotland a use has been found for the HST's , they will be fitted with power doors and have a proper Buffet.
What do we get, posts complaining of "old" trains replacing new trains .
lets see how the traveling public find the trains, after all thats who they are there for.
As for anti SNP posts, lets try and keep politics out of the thread

VTEC have fifteen sets (EC51-64, NL65) of which two (EC64 and NL65) have the superior original seats.
Hmm... I definitely saw eighteen quoted recently. Can't remember which thread it was in though, probably the Class 800 one.

Some people would rather watch the world burn than express any ounce of positivity on anything associated with the SNP.

Can't please every sour puss unfortunately.

In the grand scheme of things, regardless of who's in power up here just now, it's hard to fault the investment that is currently happening.

Planned cascade list resorted in numerical order (reading down each column in turn):

43003 43124 43138 43151
43012 43125 43139 43152
43015 43126 43140 43163
43021 43127 43142 43164
43026 43128 43142 43168
43028 43129 43143 43169
43030 43130 43144 43175
43031 43131 43145 43176
43032 43132 43146 43177
43033 43133 43147 43179
43034 43134 43148 43181
43035 43135 43149 43182
43036 43136 43150 43183
43037 43137

Unfortunately 181 suffered significant front end damage in a fatality last night, so it'll be interesting to see if that affects the progress of its transfer at all.

It's an ex EMT set - personally, I prefer the IC70 seats(apart from the rubber armrests!) - VTEC seats have similar horrid forward pitch (although not as bad) as GW grammer seats

That one keeps turning up on the Chieftains. It's a hellish experience. I've switched back to flying or West Coast for the moment.

Whilst you're right with regards to the numbers, describing IC70s as superior most certainly isn't

It's as bad as that old train they run on the fife circle.

I was working in Lochgelly a couple of weeks ago and got the slam door from Haymarket which was a nice wee unexpected bonus as I hadn't been expecting it, far more comfortable to me than the normal 158.

Let's not do the IC70 debate again please, we all have our opinions on them and we don't need to derail this thread to discuss them again! If someone really does have a burning desire then feel free to start a new thread.

Thanks,

In your opinion....in my opinion, GW grammer seats are as comfy as a wooden bench...vtec seats are slightly better.

Apologies for mentioning seats again - I had to bite....

Already people on Twitter complaining about the trains not being new.

It's going to take a huge effort to convince people that it's a basically a case of Trigger's broom.

A story that is essentially "Unrelated event occurs at the opposite end of Britain" really does smack of sticking the boot in just for the sake of it from The Scotsman. Yes the power car in question is destined for Scotrail, but exhaust fires on HST power cars, which is what this looks like, have never been uncommon. Interesting that GWR have had two in fairly quick succession, though.

Potentially unfortunate that two of the power cars bound for Scotrail have suffered damage recently that will require a degree of depot attention, both in terms of the cascade/refurbishment schedule and power car availability at GWR when sets have already begun to go off lease.

FWIW I had a minor oven fire a few weeks ago which caused approximately 20 minutes' delay to my dinner. I'm not calling for domestic ovens to be got rid of, despite having had basically the same design for 40+ years :)

Ah yes, the same fine publication that raged on about underpowered and decrepit Class 73s being used in Scotland on the CS. Turns out that they're rather good after all.

Sending English casts off to Scotland totally unacceptable. ;)

But on the serious note. Most of the things I hear people complain about with the HSTs will be fixed in the refurb. The slam doors the biggest issue (and how cold they make the train when people don't shut the windows)

I was in Arbroath today. To the South, where the road is alongside the railway you can clearly see two speed limit discs, the upper saying 65, the lower saying HST 95. Quite a significant increase.

It isn't really. Class 170s and indeed 158s are both permitted to travel at HST differential speeds as indeed were the 47/7 push-pulls back in the late 80s. So the journey time decrease will mainly be down to fewer stops and greatly improved acceleration.

A lot of people are complaining about the decision that the northern half of Scotland get 40 year old trains for 3-4hour journeys, yet the 40 mins between Edinburgh and Glasgow get brand new trains.

I totally agree the HST's are absolutely great trains. They will give much more comfort and capacity and will be a major improvement. I was on the early afternoon Edinburgh / Inverness yesterday and is was rammed people standing to Pitlochry. Once they enter service the complaints will stop when people see the improvement in service. I genuinely think they will be crowded though as more people take the train. I think they will need lengthened fairly quickly, and thankfully the stock will exist to do this.

The current moaning is more about politics than the actual trains. Will disappear soon enough.

I would hope that there is a plan to store any surplus trailers rather than send them for scrap, and that any additional vehicles required can be refurbished and brought into service fairly rapidly. In theory it should be easy to lengthen the trains should the need arise, but my biggest concern would be platform lengths. Are the HSTs to be fitted with SDO?
