That would be because they can't be, there is no 'doubting' about it

They can be coupled together, but they can't work in multiple.

I must admit that it seems really stupid that 220 and 221 can't work with 222 in multple. Why couldn't they make the coupler systems standard!

Once again, they are. But the units are incompatible electrically.

For similar units with incompatible couplers look at 170s and 171s although the 171s were requested to have different couplers.

I believe the main reason they can't be wired together is that the TMS on the 220/221s are much different (i.e. much older) than that on the 222. I think if it was so much about the electricity supplies etc that could be remedied quite easily.

170s and 171s are completely incompatible, not just electrically. most of the 2 car 171s were retrofitted with dellners, apart from three.

Although, does this mean that 171s are mechanically capable of coupling with 220s, 221s and 222s?

Yes I know that. But I am saying when they were designing the train there must have been a way to make the systems compatable. I do not understand why they didn't find a way or design it differently.

It wasn't asked for - the units were designed for Midland Mainline remember - why would they want 'their' units to be compatible with Virgin Trains'?

It's stupid, but it happened even with British Rail - Network SouthEast specified that the Networkers have features such that they would not be freely moved up north - crazy!!

I picked up "Today`s Railways" magazine today and there was an artical stating that the Pendolino could well be the last ever Hig Speed train bulit in/for the UK it was that or something along those lines.

The Pendolino wasn't the last high speed train built in the UK; it was assembled in the UK with kit parts from all over the globe (bodyshells from Italy for example).

I think this was done to allow the 171s to be coupled to the 377s in emergencies as they also have the dellners
