Road on North Coast 500 scenic route closed by flood
A road in the north-west Highlands is still closed after part of it washed away during a flood.
The A832 was shut between Achnasheen and Gorstan on Friday after "significant flooding" in the Loch Luichart area.
There has also been flood damage on the railway line in the Garve area.
Police Scotland said they hoped the road, which is part of the North Coast 500 scenic route, would reopen at lunchtime on Saturday.
A police spokesman said: "The weather has resulted in significant flooding to the road and a portion of the road being washed away.
"The public are requested to avoid the area."

So the road route to be used is not much further, but doesn't include any of the intermediate stations. :cry:

The road has reopened with traffic lights, so there is a shuttle train service between Kyle and Achnasheen.

Duncraig is not accessible by vehicle by public road in my recollection of using it when visiting friends on the castle grounds many years ago.

A look at an OS map on Bing Maps shows that it is accessible by vehicle, though probably only by a car or minibus and not a coach judging by how windy the approach road is, and it might technically be a private road (dirt track). The Google Street View car has been there too!

There is however a bus stop on the main road which would do.

It is a private access; indeed at one time a private station. The real raison d'etre for the station no longer exists, the former use by the then Highland Regional Council of Duncraig Castle as a college of further education. The way life is in the West Highlands no-one will have been marooned at Duncraig we can rest assured.

Curiously on an OS Landranger map the access is shown as a yellow unclassified road, which while it doesn't state the road is public does heavily imply it. The Explorer map shows it as a track, which is more accurate. Interesting that the Google car has been there!

I drove down the tarmac track with potholes all the way to Duncraig halt and initiated a several-point turn in front of the halt to face the correct way. Anything bigger would find itself stuck or with scuff marks on the bodywork.

It is private and I did feel a little odd driving past this mansion's front doors but the only people there were builders/workmen and they weren't that fussed by my presence.
