Just got on a train at Shortlands. While doing so a bloke accosts me asking are there barriers there. I tried to be as vague as possible but he repeated how did I get onto the platform. I wish I'd said I got off another train now.

I doubt he will ever be caught and if he is he won't appear on here. The only people who post on here are those who have never done anything like that before. Apparently the only fare dodgers the railway is capable of catching are the novice ones who do it for the first time; after that they all appear to get away with it.
Response should be - "that's for you to find out mate"
Or, "up those stairs over there"?
BTW even in the days of platform staff the exits (or later, exit) weren't always staffed

I think if I was asked something like this, I'd be tempted to mention the group of RPI's I'd seen VERY recently doing spot checks in the area......whether there were any or not!

Although there are no barriers at Shortlands there used to to be the occasional ticket checks there although they seem to have stopped at London area stations since oystercards were introduced.
There is a BTP office on platforms 3/4.
Perhaps surprisingly Bromley South is the only station between Victoria and Rochester with ticket barriers.

Highly unlikely.
The worst, blatant culpripts are almost untouchable because they'll threaten violence and/or be on drugs etc. They'll generally be let go; see Fare dodger getting away on Metrolink .
And if they are pursued, they won't care about a criminal record (it'll already be rather long).
