I believe on Saturday 26th August (Bank Holiday weekend) there will no spare HST, so loco-haulage will be the order of the day. But, does anyone know if this effects both HST's, or just the one? If just one, which one?

Also will it be top and tailed? and how many coaches? This service is already full, add enthusiasts, and it could be over rammed!

Many thanks

Info elsewhere indicates it's one return service, T'n'T by 2x GBRf 66/7s, 6 coaches + generator van.

Some conflicting info as to what exactly it's working, but latest suggestions suggest it's running an additional 1S03/04 service (0943 NOT-SKG-NOT and 1235 SKG-NOT)

It's been known about since the beginning of the month, so the fact its full will no doubt be due to plenty of enthusiasts on it already having booked tickets, but no doubt more to come...!

I was talking to a senior manager at EMT about this earlier in the week. The second (1S03 / 1S04) is the one not booked to run. The 0824 ex-Nottingham, and return, (1S01 / 1S02) is expected to be the service replaced by LHCS. I haven't heard what loco(s) will be used, but top & tailed will be the most likely scenario.

So its Bank Holiday Weekend neither HST's will run, one Loco Hauled substitute which will be probably be a least half full of enthusiasts, and the other working is cancelled then? nice one!

The HST stock is required to supplement capacity to / from St Pancake because of the Euston engineering closure.

Not cancelled, never scheduled to run.

I'm not saying this shouldn't be. But Surely Virgin have spare Voyagers with Euston shut? Could they not be used by EMT, and then the HSTs to Skeg as normal?

Virgin are still running WCML services that weekend I believe - terminating at MK Central instead, so wouldn't necessarily have any Voyagers spare.

I'm sure there's already a bit of a headache for Virgin to get sets in the right places over the weekend (and any "spare" ones likely taking the opportunity for some maintenance at Central Rivers in Burton). Hence easier for EMT to hire-in stand-alone stock from a leasing company plus locos (from GBRf reportedly).

Yes I am well aware of why the HST's are not available although having made some attempt to address overcrowding with 2 HST's over the summer, its not exactly great provision for the bank holiday weekend, but then you could argue its par for the course on the railways these days.

So what's the solution then? The second HST is only an HST when it is spare... which it isn't on that day. And they have at least replaced the busy one with Loco hauled Stock.

The booked HST will operate on 1S01/1S02 as usual, it's the second "additional" path that will be replaced by the engine and coaches. So they've actually maintained capacity for the BH weekend with both additional summer paths operating. I'm sure they are hoping it wont be full of enthusiasts but I would imagine it won't be a particularly pleasant journey for those enthusiasts who do make the journey is it will be chock full of holiday makers and excitable kids running everywhere!

You are assuming enthusiasts do not behave in the same manner.

according to the timetable, and the EM online journey planner, the later Nottingham train is not operating on the 26th:
timetable note,
Operated by our HST (High Speed Train). Runs 22nd July to 9th September (with the exception of 26th August)

My understanding is that that was the position until they found a solution to the problem of covering the second train with something that wasn't an hst?

Only six coaches, is that all that's available?

I would have thought eight or perhaps even ten!

These are being run as additionals and not in the public TT. At the control of the EMT pricing manager and privs/staff cards aren't valid on the services.

Everyone will have to pay full fare and queuing systems will be in place at both ends of the journey.

They don't want a repeat of the Derby-Crewe 37s from 2015

I hear it will be 66s TNT with 6 Mk2s 'Coffins', this sounds fun!

Well I'll be avoiding them at all costs knowing what the summer services to Skegness are like, and that's without the inevitable influx of cranks.

It was 2013.

Given it is Skegness, perhaps the obvious thing for EMT to do is to advertise that the train is only available to people who have a booking for a holiday park and then enforce it at Nottingham. That would prevent the train filling up with enthusiasts.

Another way of going about it would have been to run one of the empties legs that bring the stock in to the area as a service train - an 'enthusiasts special'. Worth pointing out there were no such restrictions when Northern operated services hauled by Tornado...

This is a bit different to the Tornado runs, EMT are going to considerable lengths to give enough capacity on the line and they want the people they intended it for to get on on!

But the ECS may well not be an EMT operated train - could well be GBRf. So how do you ticket that?

I don't suppose EMT crews sign 66s so I'm not sure it makes much difference? Either call it at a suitable station and use public rate tickets, or sell special tickets for it.

You just don't get it, do you?

The whole reason EMT are having to hire in is because their HST fleet is committed to additional trains that day, associated with the southern West Coast engineering works. They do not have the resources to run extra services for the benefit of Class 66 scratchers, which would be financially dubious to say the least.
