Are there statistics for the biggest passenger flows

Does anyone know if it's possible to get information about the most popular journeys (ie station to station, or station to group of stations etc) made in the UK?

I've been given passenger timetables for 87 and 99, and am having a fascinating time comparing the ups and downs of UK train travel since those times (journeys that are faster / slower, more frequent / less frequent).

But I was wondering if it was possible to find out that the, perhaps, 100 most popular local / long distance journeys are, to have a stab at comparing how those have fared over time!

Not exactly what you're after but the ORR produce this every quarter:

I think the origin-destination stuff is commercially confidential though.

Selected figures occasionally make it in to Network Rail's Route Utilisation Strategies (RUSs) and Route Studies.

Hopefully it will be put to use when deciding where to use 2+3 seating on trains for local services. Good for places like Camden and Chelsea, not so good for Rotherham.

Flows between stations are very tightly guarded industry stats. When I worked on an integrated public transport project for Durham County Council for a time Northern eventually and reluctantly gave us the data for the Bishop Line, but they weren't keen and took a lot of persuading!

I can't see how any BCR for any proposal could be calculated, without the chief input being O/D data and forecasts thereof. Thus, reading these reports should enable such data to emerge. A faff though.

You're just a taxpayer and farepayer that pays for all the infrastructure and all the services and provides all the profits to whoever the government deem worthy of receiving them. Why would you think you have any right to know things like that??

You get what you're given, you'll believe what you're told. And you'll pay for it too.

Thinking about this, maybe it was the way this country's railways are run that gave ol' Trumpy his notion that Mexico would pay for his wall.
